PMP Presents: Holiday Dinner!
December 7th

PMP held a celebratory dinner to allow the mentors and mentees to look back on the fall semester! The holiday dinner gave participants the opportunity to reflect on their accomplishments. Outstanding mentors were also acknowledged for all of the work they had done.


Living on the Lawn Info Session
November 21st

LSA hosted an info session along with the Middle Eastern Leadership Council, Black Student Alliance, and the Peer Advisor Program of the Office of African American Affairs. The panel included current Lawn residents who shared their insights on the application process and how living on the Lawn has affected their experience at UVA.

Roots of Immigration
November 14th


LSA and PMP came together to sponsor a panel held in the Newcomb Commonwealth Room. After watching a short video on the dangers people take to immigrate into the United States, panel members – including UVA faculty – answered questions from a moderator and from attendants as well.

IM Soccer
November 4th

soccerMembers of PMP teamed up for an intramural soccer game! Transportation was organized for the students to come together and get a break from homework.

Hispanic Heritage Month

The final event of Hispanic Heritage Month, LSA, Fuego and other organizations hosted a talent showcase. Attendants were given a brief history on Dia de los Muertos in between performances. Special guests included dancers from Charlottesville Tango, and JMU’s Grupo Candela performed for a packed house!

Noche de Carreras (Research Symposium)
October 10th

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the Hispanic American Network at Darden hosted a panel on the career paths available for engineering students after graduation. Each panel member provided a unique perspective and gave advice that was helpful for engineering and non-engineering students as well.

Minority Rights Coalition: Town Hall
October 10th

The Minority Rights Coalition (MRC) hosted a discussion on minority issues with a student panel and a roundtable discussion. The student panel represented several minority CIOs and discussed their views on the state of diversity at UVA. After the panel, attendants grouped together to share their opinions the issues brought up during the talk.

Fuego: Zumba Style Workout
October 9th


Fuego Dance Team hosted a free workout to get students active! A variety of styles were incorporated into their routine including salsa and reggaeton.

In partnership with Sustained Dialogue, PMP hosted a talk about the Latino community and diversity at UVA. Being in small groups gave students the opportunity to openly share their opinions without judgment. The groups were formed randomly which allowed others to hear diverse comments.

“Crossing Over”: Film Screening
October 6th

LSA teamed up with the UVA Center for International Studies to screen the film “Crossing Over” at the Newcomb Theatre. The film showcases how the immigration process affects those of all nationalities and how there isn’t clear solution to the refugee crisis. After the film, attendants participated in an open discussion pertaining to topics shown in the film.

PMP and TBLA teamed up for Carnival at Nameless Field! Guests enjoyed free food, music, face painting, a moonbounce! Mentors and mentees of PMP bonded by enjoying desserts from across Latin America and playing games.

Ciudades de America en la Poesia de Fernando Opere
October 3rd


At the Newcomb Kaleidoscope Room, Professor Opere spoke on the foundations and histories of cities such as Quito. After providing attendants with background information on certain cities in Latin America, he then read his own poetry.

Latinos in Education Symposium

At the Newcomb Gallery, The ELITE Hermanos of ΛΥΛ – La Unidad Latina – Alpha Epsilon Chapter, along with the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Rho Chapter and the Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated-Gamma Alpha Chapter worked together for Latinos in Education. The discussion panel focused on the obstacles Latinos face in regards to education.

Dr. Pedro Alvarez de Miranda joined us in our celebration of Hispanic Heritage to explore and understand the nuances of the Spanish language and the efforts to standardize its spread within the Americas.  Undergraduate student, Marvin Nogueda, won a door prize of a two volume dictionary!

Speaker Talk & Potluck: UVA’s First Latin American Student, Fernando Bolivar

Professor Pellon contributed a lecture at Casa Bolivar about Fernando Bolivar, the first Latin American student at UVA! Guests enjoyed a potluck while the talk was held in Spanish.

The University Salsa Club and Casa Bolivar Present: First Steps into Latin Dance

Hosted at the O’Hill Forum, UVA students were invited to learn some new dance moves, and the event also welcomed attendees of all dance levels.

Fiestas Patrias: Hispanic Heritage Month KICKOFF

100_0459At the Amphitheater, the Latino/Hispanic organizations at UVA kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month. Guests – including the Charlottesville community – enjoyed free food from El Tepeyac Restaurant and live Afro-Latino music from Tropikiimba. Coordinated by LSA, The University Salsa Club and Fuego also performed during the intermission. 100_0481

At Nameless Field, mentees were finally introduced to their mentors. They got to know each other better by playing games and bonding over food and drinks.

Speed Dating – The First Mixer
September 5th


Transfer students and first years were introduced to those involved in the Peer Mentoring Program (PMP). Mentors were grouped together so the mentees were given the chance to meet as many people as possible. They were able to get to know each other better and enjoy great food. The mentees were then given the opportunity to select their top choices for mentors.

Mentors and mentees met at Wild Wings Cafe to spend time with each other. They were given the chance to bond off-Grounds and enjoy some great food.

Sundae Sunday

In the Newcomb Kaleidoscope Room, mentees and mentees attended a meet and greet to create their own ice cream sundaes!

Pav Friday
August 30th

At Pavillion V, first years and transfer students were able to meet up with the mentors. To get to know each other better, everyone enjoyed food and drinks and also played games on the Lawn.

Community Welcome Reception
August 27th

All incoming first years and transfer students were invited to a welcome reception to learn how to get involved with various Hispanic/Latino CIOs. Students were also able to meet members of the Peer Mentoring Program, community leaders, and many UVA faculty members who could ease their transition into the community. The reception also included an informal dinner which allowed for all students to interact with each other.
