Sexual Assault Information and Support
The Office of the Dean of Students works in partnership with the
Women's Center's Sexual and Domestic Violence Services (SDVS)to provide education to students about sexual violence.
Students who believe they, or a friend, have been victimized may receive support from a variety of sources, including ODOS, SDVS, Counseling and Psychological Services at University Student Health, Charlottesville's Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA), and the Victim and Witness Assistance Programs for the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The University urges all of its students to become familiar with available support services and obtain this support. Students are eligible to receive support regardless of whether they elect to pursue criminal, civil, or administrative remedies through the University.
If you believe you, or someone you know, has been assaulted, important information about what to do after an assault is available here. Please know however, that you need not have sought medical attention in order to use the disciplinary proceedings available through the University's Sexual Assault Board.
Victims seeking legal redress should consider the following options:
- Criminal prosecution
- Civil Suit
Students seeking disciplinary action through the University do so through the University's Sexual Assault Board (SAB) which administers the
University's Procedures for Cases of Sexual Assault. The purpose of the University's procedures is to encourage students to take responsibility for their behavior, to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, to fairly discipline and sanction behavior that is inconsistent with the Standards of Conduct, and to educate students about implications and consequences of their behavior. For more information about the SAB or the Procedures, contact Dean Nicole Eramo, the Chair of the SAB at eramo@virginia.edu or by phone at 434-924-7133. Students considering adjudication under the University procedures should schedule an appointment with Allen Groves, Dean of Students, at their earliest convenience by calling 434-924-7429.
