The Student Activities Center (SAC) is a full-service resource center for student organizations at the University of Virginia. Located on the first floor of Newcomb Hall, the SAC offers a wide range of services that support events and activities provided by more than 650 contracted independent organizations (CIOs).
The vibrant and modern workspace affords students an opportunity to work, relax, and receive information about student organizations. Computer workstations, photocopying, free equipment check-out, student organization mailboxes, and storage are just some of the support services available in the SAC. History of the Student Activities Center (SAC)
In fall 2001, Student Council and the Newcomb Hall staff began collaboratively developing a new concept for shared student organization space on the first floor of Newcomb Hall (at the time in room 164). Concurrently, the University-wide Student Organizations and Programming Team (SOP) had initiated discussions about a central location for CIO services. In spring 2002, these two concepts intersected and resulted in the Student Activities Center.
During the 2001-02 academic year, the Student Council President and Newcomb Hall Director convened a small focus group of student organization leaders and found that these leaders believed a reconfiguration and modernization of room 164 to serve a broader audience was needed. The student focus group believed a shift in philosophy for the space from assigned cubicles to multi-use shared resources would better serve the needs of student organizations. This was followed by a survey of CIO presidents, which showed a high priority on services and support that would meet the needs of all student organizations, rather than focusing on space allocated to individual groups.
With the creation of the Media Activities Center in the lower level of Newcomb Hall in Fall 2010, the Student Activities Center was moved to Newcomb Hall 149 to create a physical connection between the two centers.
The Student Activities Center (SAC) is now located on the first floor of Newcomb Hall in room 149. It serves as a home base for student organization members, with a team of full-time and student staff whose purpose is supporting the over 600 student organizations and activities and all students who are interested in getting involved at the University of Virginia.
