Gail is Associate Artistic Director/Production Manager and Intern-Apprentice Director of Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven, NJ entering it’s 60th season of professional theatre from April through December. Surflight produces large musicals from April through September, smaller musicals in September and plays throughout the fall. 2009 Season includes Gershwin’s Lady Be Good, Ragtime, Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors, Buddy, 1940’s Radio Hour, Tell Me on a Sunday, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Wait Until Dark as well as the Odd Couple and Ebenezer. Since 2004 Gail served as Production Supervisor of some of the casino productions at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City in their Broadway series and since has become Production Supervisor for Jersey Show Entertainment, producing this season at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ and the El Dorado Resort and Casino in Reno, NV. I'm currently writing full time, with ten mystery novels published

(2003). We'll Always Have Parrots (2004), Owl's Well That Ends Well

Denied (2004), and Delete All Suspects (2005). Several of my books
have won national awards, including the Agatha and Anthony awards and

and Sisters in Crime. Though I'm not currently involved in any real-life
theatre, I am using my years in the UVa Drama Department as background--I
have given the heroine of my series from St. Martin's a drama professor

Elizabeth Bernard BA 2004 Drama (Lighting Design)
After graduation, I spent a short period of time in Chicago continuing
to work for the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and various other Chicago
playhouses before deciding to follow (and marry!) my beau Scott Sommers
to Washington for training as a US Diplomat. We are currently living
in Ouagadougou (wah-gah-doo-goo), Burkina Faso in West Africa on Uncle
Sam's dime, and we'll be working at the Embassy here until June of
2007. After that, it'll be a new country every two or three years.
My career as a fine art photographer (to oversimplify: it's just static
lighting design, right?) has been going full tilt boogie since our
arrival here with expat event photography, field photography for the
Millennium Challenge Corporation, and art shows. No theatre for me
at this post, but maybe next time... Cheers to all the sparkies!

I am class of '64 and spent
many MANY hours in Minor Hall. We did "Once Upon A Mattress" in
'63 (I think 63) with a follow spot through the transom above the stage
left door at the back of the audience. David challenged us to make
it work so we did. To this day I don't know if he thought we would/could
or not. For any other "old timers" I
would also mention the memory of Roger Boyle (and his camera and his
darkroom in the basement). Those were truly great and unforgettable
times.I always make time to visit the department on my all too few
occasions to be in Charlottesville and have enjoyed watching it grow
over the years.

He's been in Los Angeles keeping busy with the sketch comedy troupe OPM as producer and performer. On the actor side, he has coached James Hong in French for L’Idole, translated the DVD commentary for House of Flying Daggers, and voiced characters in Cowboy Bebop and the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series. Film credits include Showtime and Undiscovered. He most recently appeared in the new NBC series Chuck. Other TV credits include Sucker Free City, Invasion, ER, Las Vegas, Bones, Stephen King’s Desperation, The Unit,How I Met Your Mother, and The Nine.

Diane has been working in Washington, DC as an actress, choreographer and director since her graduation in December of 1996. She just got married last October (hence the Gould). Her most recent shows were "She Stoops to Conquer" at the Folger Theatre and In the Boom Boom Room with Project Y Theatre at the Source. Next up: buying a house-YIKES! And Working with DC youth at The Young Playwright's Theatre and perfroming in a one-woman show teaching girls and young women about eating disorders.

I graduated with an MFA from UVA in '93. I did a lot in theatre in New York (The Roundabout) as well as regionally at diverse organizations such as Steppenwolf, The Old Globe, The Goodman, The Prince Music Theatre, The George Street Playhouse and a couple of shows for UVA's own Transport Group in New York. Years passed and I began to study in New York with two or three vocal jazz teachers and I haven't stopped since. A song I wrote has just been picked up by two time Grammy Award winners New York Voices for their new CD. I tour steadily with my own jazz ensemble and am almost finished my third solo CD- it is called a small blue thing. Oh yeah, I taught at UVA for a year in 2001. 'Really loved the experience and an honor. I live in Manhattan.

Debra Dumas BA 1977 Drama
After graduating I took a very roundabout path with different jobs in different states, but I did finally wind up in New York in late 1982. I became a lighting designer, and a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 in 1985. I designed for dance, theatre, and opera. I was the Associate LD for The Phantom of the Opera in New York, and designed a number of international tours, primarily for dance companies. When my son was born in 1995 I had to stop touring and due to our particular family circumstances, was not able to return to designing on a full time basis for many years. I did keep my hand in, lighting benefits and special events such the NY Knicks' season opener. Now I design when I can and also teach lighting design as an adjunct professor at Pace University and Adelphi University, as well as at the Long Island High School for the Arts. I run the Lighting Design entrance examination for United Scenic Artists, and I hope to see some U.Va alumni come through!

Frances C. Furlong MA 1998 Drama
I worked with John Frick during my time at UVA. I specialized in the rehearsal process in youth theatre and wrote my thesis on what I observed when kids learn drama and perform in plays. (My sense then was that theatre teachers can’t apply the same directorial theory with kids that they do with adults). I then co-founded The Old Michie Theatre, a puppet and youth theatre in downtown Charlottesville in l989 with my husband Steve Riesenman (UVA Law l987).
After all of these years, I am excited to be continuing my work as a Drama educator, updating my thesis and pursuing life as an arts educator in the 21st century. After taking part-time education courses the last two years at Curry School at UVA, I am now enrolled full-time at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education’s “Arts In Education” Ed. M degree program. While many of the other students here are young enough to be my own children, there are lots of us “mid-career professionals” who are keeping the torch alive. While I am sabbatical, I am pleased to announce that another recent UVA Drama Dept. graduate, Rachel Witt (MFA 2008), is helping out at The Old Michie Theatre while I am in Cambridge. (He and Paul Ackerman 1978, BA Drama trekked 5 days on the Appalachian Trail, a repeat of a trip they had done twenty-five years earlier. the Kennedy Center, GALA Teatro Hispano, Studio Theatre Secondstage, Source,

Robyn Hussa proudly co-founded the New York City theatre, Transport Group, with Jack Cummings III along with other UVA alumni: Monica Russell, James Weber, Kathryn Rohe, John Story and R. Lee Kennedy.
For the six years she ran Transport Group, Robyn produced: Our Town, Requiem For William, First Lady Suite (Drama Desk Nomination - Outstanding Revival of a Musical), The Audience (Drama Desk Nomination - Outstanding Musical), NOR•MAL and Cul-de-sac. Her favorite work to date was on Transport Group's production of NOR•MAL during which therapists, doctors, survivors and experts attended each production and lead talk backs with the audience. Several young audience members were encouraged to seek treatment as a direct result of these seminars. As a result, Robyn was inspired to create a national nonprofit (NORMAL In Schools) to bring educational versions of the production to schools around the country. She now lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her pug Lucy.
Robyn is a professional actress, singer, dancer and Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200) with over 15 years experience teaching yoga, stress management, movement, dance and acting techniques to students of all ages. She currently teaches yoga with people in recovery for eating disorders at several treatment centers in Milwaukee, WI.
Robyn holds a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from The University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Arts in Drama with an emphasis in a Single Subject Teaching Credential in English from San Diego State University. She is a member of the Drama League, a recognized actor-combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors, a proud card-carrying member of Actors Equity, Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

for New Harmony Theatre, where I have had the pleasure of working with

Davis Kirby 1993 BA Drama
After Graduation, Davis pursued his MFA in Acting at Ohio
University, but left quickly to work in Las Vegas, singing and dancing
on the fabled "Strip." From
there, he worked on two Cruise Ships which took him to NYC in 1995.
In NYC, Davis performed in numerous workshops, off-Broadway, and 5
Broadway shows, including the doomed Original Broadway Cast of THOU
SHALT NOT directed by Susan Stroman with music by Harry Connick, Jr.
He also preformed in all 50 states in five National Tours, including
the leading role of Tommy in THE WHO'S TOMMY as well as two years in
CATS. On June 20th, 2004, when THOROUGHLY MODERN
MILLIE closed, having
accomplished what we wanted to do in theater, he packed his bags and
moved to Atlanta. He is now Vice President of a Bank and 30 pounds
heavier.

After being a struggling actor in New York for way too many years, my wife, Carol, and I had a kid (boy) and moved back to our favorite city -- Charlottesville, in 2001. It really feels like home here. Our son is in Third Grade. I still exist on the fringes of theatre here in town. I've had chances to direct for UVa, Heritage Rep, Randolph College in Lynchburg, Off Stage Theatre, and several shows with high schools. I might direct more but I've got this thing about wanting to be paid for theatre work. I know I'm nuts. Things are pretty idyllic otherwise.

Washington, DC-based professional actor and writer Jason Linkins has

is a resident company member. He has also worked with the Actor's
Theatre of Washington, the Studio
Theatre, Cherry Red Productions, eXposed Brick Productions, and Classika
Theatre--where he performed in four shows directed by acclaimed Russian
director and Wesleyan College faculty member Yuriy Kordonskiy. As
a writer, Jason writes The DCeiver, is a frequent contributor
to DCist.com, and recently had the privilege of serving as a guest
editor
of the widely read blog Wonkette. Jason lives in Arlington,
Virginia with his wife Caroline and their cat, Tallulah. Jason received
his
Master of Fine Arts in Acting from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dear Friends,
Saw your Web Site and enjoyed reading all about you. I was in the Virginia
Players many years ago. In 1937 when I was 14 and attending Lane High
School in Charlottesville, I played Homer in "Fly Away Home" at
the theatre in Minor Hall. It was directed by Bobby Gresham and produced
by Roger Boyle. I hung aroung Minor Hall until I entered the University
in 1940. Studied under Roger Boyle until my reserve was called up in
43. After the war I went to Broadway and was in 5 big musicals. In
46, I was a dancer/singer in over
500 performances of the original production of OKLAHOMA! at the St.
James theatre.
That was the beginning of a wonderful career in the theatre. A grandfather
at 82, I now live in Los Angeles and am on full pension from Actors
Equity and still entertain, i. e. the enclosed letter. I sing,(not
bad for 82) and tell stories. My next gig is a senior Christmas show
and on Jan. 18 at The LA Breakfast Club.
In 2004, I came back to the University for my 60th reunion and stopped
by the theatre but you were dark.
I did a number for a benefit for needy seniors who were in show business
at the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences on Oct 7th, 2006. You
may see it if you go to you-tube. I use Google. In the list click on
YouTube Broadcast Yourself. When there look up Paul Lyday in search.
If you like anything I do, I learned it under Roger Boyle many years
ago.

Dan and I are living in New Haven, CT where he will finish his program at Yale in May 2008. We had a baby girl in August of 2007, her name is Djuna and she is the sweetest girl on the planet. Who knew parenthood could be this fun? Since we moved to CT I've been teaching as an adjunct professor and directing at a number of local colleges. With baby's arrival I've landed some online courses and I'm scheduled to direct a production next spring.

is in New Zealand on a Fulbright Award, where she is working on an MPHil in Directing at Massey University. Her Fulbright project is working with a multicultural ensemble to create theatre from their own stories centered around ideas about culture in New Zealand. She is not only directing at the university but also with professional theaters in Palmerston North and Wellington. After graduating from UVa, she worked for Shenandoah Shakespeare (now called the American Shakespeare Center) for 4 years as both an actor and as Education Director; directing, teaching, and managing the Young Company Theatre Camp. She then earned her MFA in '07 in Directing at University of California, Irvine. In between these commitments, she has directed shows in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. She has assistant-directed at both Utah Shakespearean Festival and Oregon Shakespeare, and also worked on Hamlet at South Coast Repertory with Tony-award winning director Daniel Sullivan and The Clean House at Lincoln Center with Oregon Shakespeare Artistic Director Bill Rauch. After graduating from UVA, I moved to NYC to pursue my MFA in acting at the New School for Drama (formerly known as the Actors Studio Drama School).
Since receiving my MFA, I have worked in a few off-off broadway productions (References to Salvador Dali make me Hot with the Abroad Stage company, among others), got married and worked on the production of a Feature Film called "The Fields" starring Cloris Leachman and Tara Reid. My role is small in the film, but I also worked as the assistant costume designer, dresser to Mrs Leachman and moral support to my husband Faust Checho who is one of the producers and stars. We are almost done with post-production and getting ready for festival season. Who knew it would take over two years to make a movie from start to finish!!

After grad school in the Hoosier state, I returned to VA for a teaching job in Fairfax County. Although I started as a journalism adviser, I am now teaching speech and theatre! I photocopied a Washington Post play review for a class a few weeks ago and noticed that the cast included FYP legend Jason Linkins…the kids loved hearing about my first college audition for him (or, at least, they ACTED like they did…good enough)! More on the small world front…I’m mentoring a new speech coach who finished her English and Drama undergrad in ‘05, and one of my former students is now a second year drama major!

I was a Drama Major who graduated in January 1987 and studied scene design under David Weiss. I was fortunate to design two black box shoes while an undergrad. I also was a Biology Minor and spent about 3-4 years after college trying to sort out my right brain/left brain focus (which means I waited tables and did secretarial work). I finally got my act together, finished my premed courses, completed medical school in 1995 at EVMS in Norfolk, and did my pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. I have now been in practice in Norfolk for a little over 10 years and love it. I have been blessed with a husband (Clint) who has helped me through all this and two children (Kyle 16yrs. and Jacob 12yrs.). Of course, my creative left brain raises it's hand every now and then - I have a million half-finished projects/crafts going on. I recently took on painting several large murals in my newly expande d office - I realize how much I need to keep the artistic side alive.

Shortly after graduation, I became the Company Manager, and then Production
and General Manager, of Tennessee Repertory Theatre, the state's largest
professional theatre company. I also designed costumes for about a
dozen productions at The Rep and for Tennessee Opera Theatre, so all
of my hours in the basement of the Culbreth were not in vain! I was
with The Rep from 1985-1999, when I left and started a performing arts
program for children called StageWorks (check out our website at www.stageworkscamp.com),
which just had its 7th summer of programs. And then about 4 years ago,
I started working in video and am now a producer with Earnhardt Pirkle,
Inc. www.ep-video.com, which seems to be a wonderful synthesis of
everything else I've ever done.

After a long, long gig on the curatorial team of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, David Robson was ejected back into the working world, where he kills time between theatre projects. As one does. September 2007 sees the premiere of ZOLA-X, a romantic gangster fantasy David wrote and directed. He continues to work on a mess of projects with Aaron S. Luk, his ZOLA-X lead, and looks forward to supporting Luk's directing debut next year.

I stopped working in theatre quite a while ago, but I've had a great time reading the alumni news and catching up everyone's wonderful projects. I moved on to my other passion, children's books, and opened a children's bookstore in Nyack, NY. Now I've returned to graduate school (almost done) to become a reading teacher. I still get to hang around a lot of theatre as my husband, Elliott Forrest, is the artistic director of Riverspace Arts in Nyack and both of our children have the theatre bug. Our daughter is 16 and just starting to look at colleges. We're hoping to visit U.Va and would love to see all the new things happening at the theatre and visit with anyone who's around. Stefan is a dance choreographer, fight director, actor, singer and dancer in the Washington, D.C. area. He has created dances and/or fights for over 40 full length professional productions including work Off-Broadway, internationally in Canada and Uruguay, and for several regional theatres in Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Most recently, he choreographed the dances and staged the violence for Man of La Mancha for The Washington Savoyards, D.C.'s light opera company. In 2005, the production of Jesus Christ Superstar that he choreographed and created fights for at Open Circle Theatre, received 4 Helen Hayes Award Nominations (D.C.'s equivalent of the Tony Award), including one for Outstanding Resident Musical.
As an actor, he has performed for several regional theatres including: Signature Theatre, The Studio Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, The Kennedy Center, Theatre Virginia, Theatre IV, The Barksdale Theatre, Heritage Repertory Theatre and Actor's Theatre of Washington.
Stefan holds an MFA in Theatre from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and was recently promoted to the rank of Professor at the University of Maryland University College where he teaches Acting I, Acting II and Introduction to Theatre. He also teaches Movement for the Actor at The National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Georgetown.

I’m currently teaching fourth grade at The Steward School, a small independent school in suburban Richmond, Va. I received my Master of Arts in Teaching in 2004. My wife (Lynne, CLAS’84) and I have been married for 23 years, and we have two boys, one of whom is in the midst of the college application process. (UVA class of ’14?—fingers crossed!)
Between graduation and now, I’ve had roles including stay-at-home dad for two sons, Summer Camp director, educational consultant and trainer, and classroom teacher for both middle and lower school ages. In each place, I’ve tended to become the de facto drama guy, writing plays, directing them, costuming them, etc. I’ve also worked to incorporate dramatics into my classroom by developing various characters who come to my class as “guest instructors.” These include Dame Millicent Grammar (aka “Gramma Grammar”), Augustus Porcularius, an ancient Roman pig farmer who teaches Roman numerals, and Sir Cumference, a loyal knight of the round table who teaches geometry. (As the old saying goes, “Good teaching is ¼ preparation and ¾ theatre!”)
Additionally, I’ve been a stage dad for my two sons, who have each had stints in regional theatres here in Richmond, managed several Destination ImagiNation teams (creative problem solving program with a drama component) taking a couple of them to the Global Finals, and been the neighborhood “costume closet” for friends who “need something for my child, who has to be a Civil War general” or something similar. Clearly, all those hours in the basement of the Culbreth fueled my compulsion to save every scrap of clothing that “might be useful” someday. As a result, my kids have always had AWESOME Halloween and school costumes! So, although I’m not in “the business,” drama still is a big part of my life.

After a few years of doing a variety of jobs, including some free-lance costuming, I decided to go back to school. In 1988, 10 years after graduating from UVA, I graduated from Indiana University with a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science. Ever since then I have worked as a librarian in performing and visual arts libraries, including the Lincoln Center Branch of the New York Public Library, the Museum of TV and Radio in NYC, and my current position as Director of Library Services for the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. When I started grad school I thought I was changing careers, but I actually have found my studies in theatre, art history, and music invaluable in my library career, especially in my current position. I have been the Director of the Library at the NC School of the Arts for 15 years – this fall we begin the exciting process of planning a new, state-of-the-art library facility that we hope will be a model for small academic performing arts libraries. Sandra (Sandy) spent 16 years working as the Technical Director and unofficial Production Manager for Colgate University’s University Theater program. While there she taught courses in Stagecraft and Lighting Design as well as independent studies in the areas of Script Analysis, Stage Management, and Technical Direction. She also advised student theater clubs and volunteered on her sorority’s (Gamma Phi Beta) House Corporation Board. In Fall 2005 Sandy started a “new” career at SUNY Cortland where she is the Assistant Director of Campus Activities and Greek Affairs. Essentially she is the campus’ Greek Advisor and oversees the school’s College Artist and Lecture Series (CALS) along with a variety of other responsibilities. CALS is responsible for providing lecture grant opportunities as well as for bringing a diverse group of artists/speakers/performers/playwrights/etc. to campus annually. Student bus trips are taken to NYC twice a year to see Broadway shows. How lucky she has been to find two positions in higher education that have suited her so well!
