Students complete a sequence of required courses in CAD, design graphics, history of design, elements of lighting design, and studies in advanced lighting technology. Upper level lighting design courses consist of individually mentored projects aimed at strengthening design skills and developing a solid design portfolio. Students also have the opportunity to take electives in costume design, scenic design, and stage technology. All students serve as lighting Designers or assistant lighting designers on selected main stage productions. To fulfill assistantship responsibilities, students share master electrician and light shop duties and serve as teaching assistants for undergraduate lighting courses.
