  John Roberts MFA 1985 Design
Still in Florida now 14 years on with Disney. Oldest son will attend University of Florida in '07 and will major in Aerospace Engineering. Youngest now in middle school and creating havoc for batters when he pitches for his AAU baseball team. Now married 18 years and it seems like only yesterday I was in Grad School. Time Flies. Would love to hear from any of the folks who were there when I was in the early 80's.

Elizabeth Bernard BA 2004 Drama (Lighting Design)
After graduation, I spent a short period of time in Chicago continuing to work for the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and various other Chicago playhouses before deciding to follow (and marry!) my beau Scott Sommers to Washington for training as a US Diplomat. We are currently living in Ouagadougou (wah-gah-doo-goo), Burkina Faso in West Africa on Uncle Sam's dime, and we'll be working at the Embassy here until June of 2007. After that, it'll be a new country every two or three years. My career as a fine art photographer (to oversimplify: it's just static lighting design, right?) has been going full tilt boogie since our arrival here with expat event photography, field photography for the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and art shows. No theatre for me at this post, but maybe next time... Cheers to all the sparkies!

Kristin Chebra BA 1997 Drama and Government
I am an Entertainment Manager at Walt Disney World. It's the greatest job in the world,I get to work where people play. Drop me a line if you're headed down to
Orlando!

Andrea (Haggard) Wakely BA 1993 Biology/Drama (Costuming) Studio Art Minor
I started a costuming company in 2000 called Twin Roses Designs and offer in-stock and custom ordered costumes to individuals and groups. Our website is http://www.twinrosesdesigns.com if you’d like to check it out!

Bannon Puckett BA 1993 Drama & English
Upon graduating from UVA, Bannon lived in Los Angeles for a year working at the headquarters for Samuel Goldwyn's national arthouse chain Landmark Theatres. In 1996, he completed his M.Ed. in English Education at the University of Georgia. After a stint as a Managing Editor for a small electronic publishing company, he moved to Seattle to be a Marketing Communications Manager at Microsoft, where he helped launch the web site for the Xbox. Since 2002, Bannon has been bringing together his theater, marketing, writing, and education experience as the Senior Advertising Copywriter for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. In early 2006, he bought his first condo in Alexandria, Virginia, and continues to hang out with his trusty beagle Salinger.

News from the Chair
by Tom Bloom, Chair, Associate Professor, Scenic Design

Tom Bloom

Before the month of October was even upon us we already closed our first show of the season - Waiting for the Parade.  Congratulations on a successful run to director Jonathan Green (’07) and his wonderfully creative artistic staff of undergraduate designers and actors!  I also wish to thank guest performer Judith Reagan, who joined with the company of undergraduate women in telling this poignant story of life on the home front during WWII.

Preparations for Scapin, directed by Marianne Kubik, are drawing close to its October 19 opening. Big Apple Circus clowns Greg and Karen deSanto came in to assist the cast of Scapin with physical comedy work - so the production promises to be an all out fall-down, slapstick treat!

At last writing I noted that we were concluding three searches for various positions in the department.  All three searches werea successful and we are pleased to introduce Steven Warner, Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp, and Theresa M. Davis.

Steven Warner is taking over the position of Technical Director of Theatre

Steve Warner
Steve Warner

Operations that was previously held by Shawn Paul Evans who becomes the department’s Production Coordinator.  Steve comes to us from Las Vegas where he served as the Assistant Head of Props and Puppets for the Cirque du Soleil productions of KA and Mystere.  If you happen to be driving past the Culbreth Drama building some day and see actors bungee jumping off the Culbreth stage tower you’ll know that Steven is at work.  Steven already has implemented a number of important changes in our operational procedures that will benefit all.

Rose BeauchampRose Pasquarello Beauchamp

Another new addition to our faculty is Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp. After a national search Rose was hired to teach a variety of technique courses in Dance that form the department’s Minor in Dance program, recently approved by the college.  Among other additions to the program Rose plans on offering Ballet, Contact Improv, and Dance Theatre courses.  Rose comes to us from Emerson College and received her M.F.A. degree in Dance from Cal Arts.

Theresa M. Davis
Theresa M. Davis

Theresa M. Davis joins us in spring term and will assume

the position of Associate Professor of Cross Cultural Performance.  You may recall that last season Theresa directed our production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.  Theresa just completed directing August Wilson’s Seven Guitars as guest director for the Purdue University Department of Theatre.  She arrives here in November to cast The African Company Presents Richard III, which opens February 15.

In other news the Virginia Players hosted a late afternoon picnic, October 1, at Washington Park that also served as a departmental welcome for Ed Morgan, guest director for George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man, opening November 15.  Ed has an impressive list of credits that includes serving as the Associate Artistic Director of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.  Ed also joins Richard Warner teaching the M.F.A, Period Acting Styles class.

With great sadness, I report the loss of two longtime friends of our department, Stacy Boyle and Howell Draper.  And as of this writing all in our building are still stunned by the death of Lizzy Hafter (’06).  Contributions may be made to the Lizzy Hafter Memorial fund, c/o University of Virginia, P.O. Box 3446, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
