In the fall of 1993, 13 classmates met at the University of Virginia's Department of Drama and have been connected at the hip ever since. In 2001 they formed a not-for-profit theatre company in New York city and called it Transport Group. Founded by Jack Cummings III and Robyn Hussa, Transport Group produces work by American playwrights and composers with the aim of exploring the human experience in America in the 20 th and 21st Centuries. Their work has ranged from classics like Thornton Wilder's Our Town to original musicals like The Audience (employing over 105 artists) and their current world premier entitled Cul-de-Sac by Tony Award nominee John Cariani. Cul-de-Sac is a dark comedy that explores the colliding worlds of three couples living at the end of a typical suburban lane. It's spring and Christy Smith gets out of bed for the first time in months, as Jill Johnson notices something horrible written in her dayplanner, and Irene Johnson tries in vain to order pizza from Sal's. Cul-de-Sac's cast and production team is comprised of 7 U.Va. alums. In five short years, Transport Group has been nominated for five Drama Desk awards alongside Broadway's best. In particular, UVA lighting design professor R. Lee Kennedy was recognized with a Drama Desk Award nomination for his innovative lighting design on the smash musical The Audience. The Transport Group family is always looking to involve as many UVA
alums as they can. If you are interested in getting involved
or learning more about Transport Group, please contact Robyn or Jack
