News from U.Va. Drama Faculty and Alumni

Sideshow Theatre Company, a Chicago-based theatre company founded in 2007 by three U.Va. Drama graduates- Jonathan Green (BA Drama ’07), Walt McGough (BA Drama ’06) and Matt Fletcher (BA Drama ’07), was 1 of 100 non-profits to win $25,000 in the Chase Community Giving program.  The innovate program gives Facebook users the chance to support local charities by voting on the most deserving non-profit organizations.  The U.Va. Drama alumni community worked tirelessly together to vote Sideshow into the top 100.   

Kate Brennan (MFA Acting ’08) starred as Harper Pitt in Angels in America: Parts 1 and 2 with Philadelphia’s Bckseet Productions, where Kate also acts as Co-Artistic Director.   

Sarah Drew (BA Drama ’02) recently starred as “Suzy Pepper” on an episode of the Fox TV show Glee.

J Hernandez (MFA Acting ’08) is playing the title role in Hamlet in the North Carolina Shakespeare Theatre Festival's 2010 tour of Shakespeare To Go.

Catherine Kim (BA Drama ’06) made her film debut as Charlece in Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past

Nate Patten (BA Drama ’06) was the conductor for Toxic Avenger in NYC at New World Stages. 

Mark Scharf (MFA 1984 Playwriting) just learned that his new full-length, FORTUNE'S CHILD has been selected as a Semifinalist for the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's 2010 National Playwrights Conference AND has been accepted by the Great Plains Theatre Conference, which will take place in Omaha, Nebraska from May 29th through June 5th, 2010. Also, his plays OFF THE GRID and REPLAY will be produced by the Reedy Point Players as part of the Delaware Theatre Association's DTAFest 2010, March 26th and 27th 2010, in Middletown, Delaware.

Emily Swallow (BA Middle Eastern Studies ‘01) starred as Viva in POP!, a musical about Andy Warhol, at Yale Repertory Theatre. Blake Segal (BA Drama ’08) was the understudy for the leading man in this production as well. 

FACULTY:

R. Lee Kennedy, Associate Professor, Lighting Design
Lee was the Lighting Designer for The Light in the Piazza atthe Philadelphia Theatre Company.

Marcy Linton, Assistant Professor, Costume Technologist
Marcy was the Draper for Finian’s Rainbow which opened on October 29, 2009 at the St. James Theatre on Broadway.  She worked directly with costume designer Toni-Leslie James.

Richard Warner, Professor, Head of Acting
Richard will be on his sabbatical leave in the spring and in residency in Chicago. He will be appearing in the Sideshow Theatre Company's production of Medea with Child, written by Janet Burroway. Ms. Burroway is a lauded novelist, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book of the Year award.  Sideshow Theatre Company was founded by Drama alums Jonathan Green, Walt McGough and Matt Fletcher. Scottie Caldwell and Karie Miller are very active associates of this company. Wahoos Lisi Stoessel, Autumn Shiley, Ben Warner and John Bonner have all contributed to their past productions. While in Chicago, Richard will be in conversations with program directors at the Goodman, Steppenwolf, Chicago Shakespeare and Victory Gardens theaters. He will also be observing improv classes and discussing trends and techniques with master teachers from Second City and Improv Olympics. He intends to meet with a number of Chicago casting directors for theater, film and commercials. Richard's plan is to lead the life of an urban actor in the Windy City, so that he can bring the "lessons" learned from his experiences back to his actors-in-training in C'ville.  And you just might find him at a Cub or White Sox game when spring arrives...
