Drama and Dance Students Chosen as College Arts Scholars

BloomHarrison Gibbons

Harrison Gibbons (3rd year, Drama Major) and Meaghan Cabot (2nd year, Secondary Education and French Major, Dance Minor) were selected to participate in the new College Arts Scholars Program.  The Arts Scholars Program is intended to attract and support the very best students in the arts and awards funds to deserving students to develop independent study projects.  Harrison and Meaghan were nominated by Drama and Dance faulty based on their continued contribution and deep commitment to our department on both the academic and performance fronts.

Harrison Gibbons recently acted in U.Va. Drama's The Voysey Inheritance and his own one-man stage adaptation of Nic Pizzolatto's short story Between Here and the Yellow Sea. Earlier in the Spring semester, he performed in the student production God Is on the Radio and ran sound for U.Va. Drama's Songs for a New World.  This past Fall, he appeared in U.Va. Drama's Twelfth Night, helped to revive the Lemming Street Players staged reading ensemble, and assistant stage managed U.Va. Drama's Ubu Roi.  He has performed in Pippin and Fiddler on the Roof with First Year Players as well as Urinetown: the Musical at Live Arts.  In his spare time, Harrison works in the Drama Department Box Office.  Thanks to the College Arts Scholars Program, Harrison will spend this summer at the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts as an acting apprentice in their Summer Performance Training Program.

Meaghan recently performed in U.Va. Dance’s Spring Dance Concert: “Cross the Line…”.  Her dance experience consists of musical theatre and show choir, two years of summer intensives and studio classes as well as eight years on various school dance teams.  She is currently a member of the Virginia Dance Team and the National Co-ed Honor Fraternity Phi Sigma Pi.  She will serve as a Resident Staff next academic year and in her spare time, works at the Newcomb Hall Information Desk.  Thanks to the College Arts Scholars Program, Meaghan will attend the Doug Varone and Company Summer Dance Program at SUNY Brockport in Rochester, NY.  The program is a mixture of classical ballet, modern and movement dance.  She also plan to take other dance classes and workshops over the summer to get the most she can out of the scholarship.

The College of Arts & Sciences and the new College Arts Scholars Program are recent recipients of a 2008 Jefferson Trust Grant. Read more about the Jefferson Trust Grants here.
