Student Spotlight: Cornelia Granbery

After receiving the College of Arts & Sciences Arts Scholar award, Cornelia (4th year economics major, dance minor) traveled to New York City this past summer to research various dance genres.

“This summer in New York City, I took 3 dance classes a week and interned at Dance Films Association two days a week for ten weeks. The types of dance classes that I took included: modern (Horton), contemporary lyrical and jazz, tap, hip hop, street jazz, Latin Jazz, Theatre Jazz, Jazz Funk, Samba Afro-Brazilian, Zumba Latin Fitness, West African, Belly Dance, ASSAF (Flexibility) as well as Aerial. I was introduced to professional choreographers, teachers, and dancers. I learned a lot about the dance world in New York City and about myself as a student and a dancer.

Furthermore, my internship at Dance Films Association introduced me to a genre of dance known as "Dance on Camera." The projects I worked on included archiving the VHS library, editing the DFA Journal, recording entries for the 2011 Festival, as well as many other small tasks. Some of the extra activities I was able to participate in included: helping prepare for and attending a screening at the Ailey School in June; watching a panel session for the 2010 post-production funding applicants; and lots of free time spent watching old and new films, as well as researching films shown at other festivals! I met lots of people involved in the film and dance world in New York, and the head of the board at DFA even gave me a private lesson in using Final Cut Pro.

To follow up from my summer in New York City, this semester I choreographed, directed, and edited my own short dance film! I worked with seven U.Va. dance minors and filmed them at various locations around the Charlottesville area. My film is titled "Boy Meets Girl" and premiered in the U.Va. Fall Dance Concert, November 11 - 13, 2010. The theme of the concert this semester was Dance Theatre, and my film combined elements of movement and media to provide a critique of pop culture in our society. The film focuses on romantic comedies and pokes fun at how unrealistic movies can be when it comes to love and relationships. My film references movies including: Jerry Maguire, Romeo + Juliet, The Notebook, Notting Hill, (500) Days of Summer, When Harry Met Sally, and Dirty Dancing. I had such a great time making the film and plan on applying to various film festivals around the U.S.!"
