The East Asia Center was founded in 1975 to provide a forum for faculty and student interest in East and Southeast Asia. The Center sponsors a speaker series and travel grants, and promotes activities and events related to Asia. The Center is an interdisciplinary organization of faculty, each of whom is a full member of a department. Asia-related courses are taught as part of the various departmental curricula.

CLTA-VA Successfully Launched
Miao-fen Tseng has led a group of dedicated K-16 Chinese language educators to successfully launch the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Virginia (CLTA-VA).  During her presidency from 2009-2011, she will work closely with the Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA) to increase the visibility of Chinese language education and maximize professional exchanges with other foreign language representatives associated with FLAVA.
New Estate Gift to UVA Will Support East Asia Center
Part of Gertrude Greenslade's generous endowment to the University will support the East Asia Center and the Center for South Asian Studies.  The College will be able to add course offerings in related social sciences and humanities and provide administrative support for the new Asia Institute.
