Ming-Jer Chen, E. Thayer Bigelow Research Professor of Business Administration, teaches strategy and international management courses in Darden’s MBA program. Renowned for his extensive scholarship in premiere management journals, Chen has received several awards from such organizations as the Academy of Management, where he has served as the Chair of the Business Policy and Strategy Division. Addressing business groups internationally, Chen has made contributions to East-West dialogue on business and management, including his keynote speech to the World Economic Forum’s China Business Summit 2000 in Beijing. His book Inside Chinese Business: A Guide for Managers Worldwide provides an insider’s perspective on the intricacies of Chinese business worldwide and explains how to compete and cooperate with this powerful business group.


Before joining the Darden faculty in 2001, Chen was the founding director of the Global Chinese Business Initiative at the Wharton School, and previously, on the faculty at Columbia Business School. He holds affiliations with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Imperial College of Science, Technology, & Medicine in the U.K., and the National University of Singapore. His corporate teaching and consulting clients include Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Bristol-Myers Squibb (U.S.A.); BOC Gases (U.K.); the State Economic and Trade Commission, Kelon Electric Holdings, and the People’s Construction Bank of China (China); the Institute for Information Industry and the Ruentex Group (Taiwan); and the Executive Talent Association (Hong Kong).
