Principles Major Minor Distingusihed Major Tutoring Awards Transfer of Credit Undergradate Courses Frequently Asked Questions

Transfer Credit Policy

To receive economics major credit for courses taken away from UVa, including SEMS courses, you must seek permission from the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Economics before taking the course.

  1. Once you have begun your study at UVa, majors and minors may transfer in ECON 201 and 202. Minors may not transfer any other economics course. Majors may not use transfer credit for 301 or 302, but (with prior approval) may transfer a maximum of 6 credits in economics electives. Majors must take at least five of their ten required courses in Charlottesville.

  2. Declaring the economics major requires a minimum C+ in ECON 201 or 301. Transfer courses do not carry a grade. If you transfer ECON 201 from another university, you must complete ECON 301 at UVa with at least a C+ before declaring the major.

  3. Courses at any reputable college or university will count towards your major if they clearly parallel courses that are offered here with an Economics (ECON) mnemonic. Here are the rules that we normally follow in awarding transfer credit for courses taken elsewhere:

    • Courses that have no course prerequisites transfer as ECON T-100 or T-200;

    • Courses that have introductory economics as a prerequisite transfer as ECON T-300;

    • Courses that have intermediate economics as a prerequisite transfer as ECON T-400.

  4. Note that only one course numbered below 300 can be used to satisfy the economics electives requirement. If you have already taken ECON 206, a second course that transfers at the ECON T-200 level will not help you to complete your economics major.

  5. When you're ready to apply for transfer credit, please leave the following items in Professor Reynolds' mailbox in the Department of Economics main office (Room 312, Dynamics Building, 2015 Ivy Road):

    • If you are seeking transfer credit for STUDY ABROAD, bring a completed green Request for Transfer of Credit form, available at the International Studies Office, 208 Minor Hall.  For transfer credit from a U.S. SCHOOL, use the form downloadable at: http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/undergrad/forms/request_transfer_credit.html

    • A catalog description of the course, showing the prerequisites and content.

    • A copy of a recent VISTAA form or transcript.

    • A note explaining that you want the course to apply to a major in economics. (No transfer credit can be used for the minor.) Professor Reynolds will email you after he receives this paperwork.

If you need more advice on this issue, please see Professor Reynolds during office hours (Monday and Thursday, 8:30-11:30 a.m.) or contact him by e-mail at br3p@virginia.edu.
