Frequently Asked Questions about Applying to the Distinguished Majors Program in Economics

1.  What is the Distinguished Majors Program? 

A description of the program is on the departmental website at www.virginia.edu/economics/distinguishedmajor.htm

2.  Who should apply?

Economics majors in the spring semester of their third year with a strong overall record and a grade point average of at least 3.6 in economics.

3. How do I apply?

You should fill out the application form fully online, then either (a) print it out and mail it to Annette Kaufman-Horner, Economics Department, P.O. Box 400182, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4182; or (b) bring your completed application to Annette Kaufman-Horner, Room 326, 2015 Ivy Road (Dynamics building). Your application must be accompanied by a current unofficial UVA transcript.

4.  What is the deadline?

Your application is due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2008.

5.  How are decisions made about admission into the program?

A committee of economics faculty members considers each application, taking into account the student’s academic record, including the difficulty of the courses taken. Those students viewed as most likely to be able to complete an independent research project are chosen.

6.  When will I hear if I have been accepted into the program?

You should hear by April 4, 2008, in time to make your course selections for Fall 2008 preregistration.
