Police Alert: Men report sexual assaults in residences near Grounds

November 17, 2011

Since September, Charlottesville Police have received multiple reports of nighttime apartment break-ins in residences adjacent to the University. Larceny is not a motive.

Male victims report that they awaken to find themselves being groped. In each case, the assailant has entered through an unlocked door. The suspect is described as a thin black male.

The incidents, which have taken place on 17th Street NW, Virginia Avenue, University Circle and Wertland Street, are believed to be related.

Most reports, Charlottesville Police say, have come hours or even days after the incidents. They are asking for any related information and remind residents to lock their doors.

If you are the victim of a similar assault in the future, call 911 immediately. If you have any information you believe is relevant to these cases, please contact Detective Newberry of the Charlottesville Police Department at 434-970-3273.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Strine approved distribution of this message.
