Tip of the Month
Secure Your Stuff!
December 11, 2011 — Congrats on completing fall semester! As you head out for a much-deserved break, make a plan with your roommates to leave things in good order and keep your home off a burglar's wish list. Follow these simple steps before you leave so you don't become a victim.
- Close and lock all doors and windows; close the curtains too.
- Do not leave valuable items near windows. Make a list of your valuables and record any serial numbers.
- Lock sliding doors and place a bar in the tracks of the door.
- Do not hide spare keys outside.
- Buy a timer to turn on exterior and interior lights at a pre-determined time.
- Hold your mail and newspapers until you're back or ask a trustworthy neighbor to bring in mail and papers and watch over the house while you are away.
- Leave your heat set at 60 degrees to be sure water lines do not freeze and break.
- Activate the security alarm if you have one.
If you return home and something looks questionable (slit screen, broken window, open door, etc.), do not go inside. Go elsewhere and call 911.
