Program

Chair Martin Krebs called the meeting to order at 1:37 p.m. followed by introduction of Council members and guest speaker Lee Wootten.

Lee Wootten (Interim Director, Community Relations)
Her opening remarks centered on the importance of employees giving to the CVC (Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign) and the difference their contributions make in the long run. She added that amongst the state institutions that contributed to the CVC in 2001, UVA led the way. Despite the current budget crisis, Ms. Wootten encouraged employees to continue to give because their contributions make a difference.

CVC (Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign)

  1. Authorized by the Governor
  2. No individual accounting involved
  3. Charities must spend at least 25% on administrative expenses
  4. Spending must be non-discriminatory
  5. Pledge card should reflect interests

Why give to the CVC?

  1. Easy to do
  2. Donor can give to 3 or more charities of their choice
  3. Pool of undesignated funds distributed to charities based on designation

Ms. Wootten added that 100% of an individual’s contribution is distributed to their designated charity. On average, the CVC received approximately 78% donations.

As a final note, Ms. Wootten announced that the deadline for the CVC contributions is December 6, 2002. If you have questions, please give her a call at 924-1321 or email ilw2t@virginia.edu.

Monthly Reports
Report from Alan Cohn
He opened up the meeting for questions or concerns from council members

  • One concern raised by a council member Steve Lawrence was the regular and overtime pay to Facilities Management employees. Apparently, some employees have not been paid since October 1, 2002.
  • Another issued raised focused on leave time.
  • Retirement incentives were another issue

Alan commented that the Payroll Department is working diligently to ensure that employees are receiving their correct pay. Like most new systems, it takes both time and patience to get the kinks out.

On a side note, Alan announced that the last day to opt-out of VSDP is November 25, 2002. He reminded council that the decision is irrevocable after this date.

Concerns
Paulette raised the issue of merging our employee council with the Provost Employee Council since attendance appears to be getting smaller. A council member suggested contacting Megan first with the current roster. When asked why attendance was decreasing, council members could not seem to come up with any definitive answers.

As a solution, Alan suggested that council might consider reexamining the time of day or day of the month the meetings are held. For instance, the Provost Employee Council holds their meetings in the mornings (rather than the afternoons) and serves breakfast.

Announcements
Martin suggested pushing back the council elections until January or February 2003 so that adequate representation from each department is present when the elections are held.

As a final note, Alan said that he would email to everyone the day and times of the other Employee Councils.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m
