Old Business:
The issue regarding usage of the Intramural Recreational Facilities was brought up. Harland Harris reiterated his findings that tracking the facilities usage is a problem but it’s being looked into. There is a possibility for options, such as package deals that people can afford. Giving employees additional time to work out during business hours should be a supervisor’s decision. Some divisions are more flexible than others. This needs to be more balanced throughout the University. Alan was impressed with the number of creative ideas that units had come up with to meet employees’ needs. Georgia Grant suggested that the importance of utilizing the fitness facilities should be fielded down from Leonard Sandridge to supervisors. Beth Reinhard suggested a 3day per week swipe card to help with tracking facilities usage. Katherine Ward mentioned how her division gathers together to walk and pass out healthy recipes. This is what the University needs more of. There should be more publication of activities, such as a department walking together, to get the word out.
Paulette Vining confirmed that the Payslip issue for MAC users has been resolved.
Emily Bardeen, Director of Faculty and Staff Career Services, spoke on New Opportunities and Benefits for Education within the University. The Conference and Resources fair is on March 8th from 8:30a.m. -12:30p.m.at Newcomb Hall, 3rd fl. The fair is to help you pick the right career and show how you fit in. They will be allotting 20 minutes to meet and talk with exhibitors. She also talked about the new Education Mentor and Manager Award. This is an employee nomination and should go to someone who has been supportive in furthering an employee’s education. The Dean of Continuing Ed. Prof. Studies will be one of the speakers at the conference and Emily also suggested pre-registering.
The tuition waiver program allows employees to take one class per semester, excluding summer, at no charge. Beth Reinhard questioned if this class has to be job related. Emily says it depends on how your supervisor defines job related. Bill Neibel asked why the BIS program doesn’t allow an employee to get a second Bachelor’s degree. Also, why are some courses in the COD labeled for specific students only and not employees? It was suggested that he speak with the professors themselves. Also Bob Plofkett may be of some help in these areas.
After the March 8th conference the list for career definitions will be more specific to UVA. Another benefit to the career guides is to help with rewriting your resume and finding the right occupation for you.
Kathleen Jump stated that the Charter bill goes before the Legislation today, Feb.18th, 2005. If the bill passes, we will stay state employees, but with merit raises available using private funds. Everyone will still get their State raises; however, if the State doesn’t give raises, the University can use private funds to process increases. This will start to evolve July 1st, 2005. Also, this legislation will involve all of Education, not just UVA, William and Mary, VA TECH.
Alan Cohn talked about the remodeling of all the Current Councils web sites, which will begin by setting up templates for standardization. The new design will also include easier access and the ability for employees to easily determine which council they report to. Nancy Tramontin is setting up the template for the web site. HR is fully aware of all new hires, so they can help by putting employee council brochures into all new employee packets, which will let them know the proper Council for their department.
Beth Reinhard went to the HS Council meeting. They had a new color brochure that provided the Council Chair’s name and listed what the council does. Items included getting traffic lights on grounds and helping employees quit smoking. Most of the information was taken from their website.

New Business:
·
Jon Rice will be stepping down as Chair. We need
to think about nominations for the Co-Chair position, but need to check with
Arlene to see what she wants to do. We can discuss this further at the March
meeting.
·
Beth suggested we work on a new brochure for the
Employee Faculty and Staff Resource fair in April.
·
Katherine Ward brought up the issue of needing
sidewalks around Fontaine and around grounds for employee safety. We need more
employees pushing for this. It was suggested David Neuman,
the University Architect be a future guest speaker.
·
Missy suggested we put together questions for
Ann Broccoli in Benefits and see if she can be a future speaker. Missy is also
going to speak with Carol Horowitz about having Charlie Grisham speak in March
about the New Student Systems Project.
