The June minutes were approved for distribution and posting on the Website.
Arlene talked about the retreat held on June 22nd. There were twelve people in attendance. One of the things that became apparent is that we all have the same goals towards what we want to accomplish. The next retreat will be the third week in Sept. They would like to meet twice a year to see if we can get more projects done. Kathleen Jump mentioned the three areas that are being worked on by people at the retreat, Best Practices, Managing up-Administration, and Resources concerning, community, job and school.
Arlene, Gina and Paulette talked about distribution
of the Perks Cards. This is a State program, you can’t use your
Jon Rice read a letter to the council from Mark E. Fletcher, Director, Intramural Recreational Sports Department regarding the increase in subsidy for university employees who have a gym membership. Mark Fletcher commended the councils for the work that went into this project and how unique it was for all the council’s to have participated.
Arlene mentioned the Day of Caring is coming up. We need to decide what we’d like to do for this years project. Last year we worked outside helping to build a garden area in an elementary school. We accomplished in one day what they had expected to do in 2 years.
Nancy Rivers was appointed Chief of Staff to President Casteen.
Guest Speaker
Mark S. Doherty, Chief Housing Officer
Housing is an auxiliary operation consisting of 140 classified staff. Housing has $27,000,000.00 in revenue annually. $4.5 million a year goes to restorations and preservation of buildings. $11 billion is in reserve for replacement of residential buildings. There are 72 faculty/staff residences and 123 student family units.
The Housing Division consists of 5 departments.
1. Faculties & Finance-Budget Control.
2. Accommodations-Customer Service issues.
3. Conference Services-Sherry States is the director and hires students to fill positions. We have the largest program in the South East. Guest count over a twelve-week period was approximately 90 thousand. All beds are used in the summer for conferences. The money generated through the summer benefits housing and student rates.
4. Human Resources-This is a new department which consists of training & staff development. 94% of employees participated in some form of education from GED, job related tasks, foreign languages to citizenship. The online training for pay stubs has been a major challenge.
5. Data-research technology-keeping track of tools, shops, carpentry, maintenance, past year acceleration.
How do you determine
who lives where?
1st year students, approximately 3100 live on
campus. Priority in housing goes to 2nd year students. Some students
feel more comfortable in certain areas. They try to keep the selection as
random as possible. There is no agency relationship with Darden or the
In Language housing there are no 1st year students because they need to have some sense of the language.
Are more people buying?
Things have changed within the community. There is no longer a waiting list due to more outside community complexes. Also, UVA doesn’t overbook. There are 1300 bed spaces for 1st year students. Housing is working to develop a relationship with high school councilors to get a better idea for students needs. Some of the amenities provided are, Cable TV, high speed Internet, laundry, telephone, community spaces and group study spaces, air conditioning in some dorms, and some have a dining area.
There will be 2 new buildings completed in 2008. The project will cost $260,000,000.00
How do you allocate
spaces for Conferences?
All conferences must be affiliated with the university. Housing can refuse people from coming back if they created damage or there was a physical confrontation.
Do you offer housing to
same sex couples?
We are required to follow the laws and statutes of the Commonwealth, which prohibits co-habitation of the same sex or if not of marital status. You will not get couples benefits.
Will it change with the
Charter status?
Probably not because we are still a state institution.
What safe guards are
you using in case of terrorist attacks?
We have a strong police presence. We use swipe cards on dorm entrances.
Housing is looking to eventually merge housing with education enrichment, per example: The French and Language Houses.
Nykki Critzer gave a tour of one of the campus dorms, showing the rooms, bath area and entryway.
