I.                   Old Business:

The Council will participate in the Day of Caring on Sept. 21st, from 9:30a.m. -12:00p.m. Stories will be read to Elementary students grades k-3 at the B.F. Yancey Elementary School, 7625 Porters Rd. Esmont.

Updates:

Alan Cohn mentioned the Faculty/Staff Resource fair on Nov. 10th will be combined with the Benefits Fair-open enrollment session. It will be a combination of all internal resources at UVA. Starting early a.m. and going all day. Timothy Eckert mentioned it is difficult to get people from Student Affairs to attend. Nykki Critzer is supposed to be getting a Bulletin Board for the Councils at the fair.

There is concern that employees have never heard of Employee Council. Are all departments getting representation and what can we do to get better communication between employees and the councils? We need to start by finding out what departments are not represented.  Kathleen Jump suggested we continue our discussion at the next meeting.

Guest Speaker

Charles Grishim-Student System Project

Cmg@virginia.edu

The goal of the Student system Project is to replace ISIS with a state-of-the-art, enterprise-wide, student information system. Students will be able to use the new system for all their administrative needs. It will make the students’ lives better because they can do everything on line and at one time.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who interact with the university on a yearly basis. The College of Wise has a strong interest in staying with us and following where we are going with this new system. There will be a lot of integration in the future.

Our student administrative system is our face to the world. ISIS cannot keep up with the needs or expectations of today’s students. Most of our competitors-our peer institutions have already upgraded their student systems.  The University of Minnesota started a new system six years ago, and now receives standing ovations from the parents of students when they demonstrate it.

There is an Executive Committee sponsoring this project. Other committees are the Core Advisors, Student System Advisory committee, workshops involving people from every school and unit throughout the University, Students, and Project Team. Pre-implementation will take approximately 1 year, and Implementation will take approximately 3-4 years.

The system will have to work with multiple browsers to make it as simple as possible for students. They are also hoping to have advisor’s signatures electronically approved. The system will be for people-our students, staff, and faculty. The system will be built by the people. You can follow the Student System Project from the website www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem/studentSsProj/. You can participate by sending suggestions to StuSys@virginia.edu.

II.                New Business:

Jon Rice volunteered to draft a written statement regarding diversity for all the councils for the website. The statement will indicate that the recent racist incidents do not represent the sentiment of University Employees. Everyone agreed this would be a good idea to put on the website.

Jon Rice, Beth Reinhard , and Sebrina Ivey are on the Nominating Committee for elections. You can send all three e-mails with your nominations. You can nominate more than one person for a position.

Jon mentioned that he uses Newcomb Hall as the meeting place for council so people can bring guests to see what goes on at council.

We will discuss Football Parking and recording leave time for Hurricane work at the next meeting in October.

Our next meeting will be held on Oct.20th, 2005 @1:30p.m. in the Commonwealth room, Newcomb Hall. Bob Sweeney, Senior Vice President for Development and Public Affairs will be our guest speaker.

Mr.Sweeney leads the University’s development and university relations efforts. The university is in the silent phase of a $3 billion capital campaign. Please have questions to Mr. Sweeney by October 4th.
