Updates

Alan Cohn, Human Resources ex officio:

·       Alan had a meeting with Vtech and William & Mary about Restructuring. He asked the Council had they been hearing any concerns about the restructuring.  Most people are not as worried as before because everything for existing employees will be the same. They will have more information coming out in late May. Inside UVA comes out June 2nd and will have updated information as well.

·       The UHR renovations will help give the University a face lift and add more security for employees working in the building.

·       The Job Fair will be on May 11th, from 3pm-8pm.

Kathleen Jump, EVP/ECC ex officio:

·       The Governor made an amendment to the Restructuring to include language regarding communication with employees. The legislature vetoed the amendment and sent it back to the Governor.  There will be no changes to Human Resources this year. New employees will be hired under the new changes. Existing employees will have the option to change.

·       President Casteen is trying to communicate in written form regarding the Living Wage issue.

·       The State of the University will take place in Cabell Hall Friday the 21st at 12:00 noon.

·       Lights are up at crosswalks & rumble strips have been installed on Emmet Street. They have also lowered the speed limit.

2.               New Business:

·       There was some discussion regarding the Living Wage protest and whether representatives of the council had been receiving feedback from other employees about their concerns. Some people felt that President Casteen could have shown stronger leadership by presenting the Living Wage issue with the General Assembly. President Casteen did offer to take the students to the General Assembly prior to the protest.  The University cannot by law dictate to Vendors what they pay their employees. Some people were concerned about the students not getting food. However, they were provided with food that was non-perishable. The University was trying not to encourage the students to stay. They were free to leave at anytime. People wondered why the students were protesting and not the people who were actually working for minimum wage. This is a national level issue.  The Professor who was arrested was asked several times to leave the area but she refused to do so. People felt that at the entry level for UVA you are also given the opportunity to further your education and advance through the system.

·       March Council Minutes were approved to go up on the web.

·       Revitalization Planning and Discussion. We reviewed and discussed changes to the Bylaws. The election process in the Bylaws will be further discussed at the next meet in May. All changes to the bylaws need to be approved by Leonard Sandridge. The restructuring proposal for coverage of the council meetings and getting information to employees is on going and will be further discussed at the next meeting in May.

The next Council meeting will be on May 18th, 2006. We will be meeting at 400 Ray C. Hunt Dr. in Conference room A. We will continue discussing our Council “Revitalization” workshop. It is important that all members attend this meeting.
