Council Business

I.                Old Business:

Missy reminded everyone about the $50.00 subsidy for the Athletic Facilities. This needs to be used by employees in order for the subsidy to continue. If there is not a measurable increase in the Athletic Facility usage, the subsidy will be returned to the original amount of $25.00. The Council will inquire on whether the current subsidy can be extended to other facilities in Charlottesville.

There was also expressed concern for better lighting at crosswalks around the University, and especially near Mem Gym.  Kathleen Jump reported that several enhancements were recently made to the crosswalks along Emmet Street near Mem Gym.  Kathleen will investigate whether there are plans for improved lighting and will bring information to the next meeting...

Updates

Jackie Cooke from Human Resources

·       Mentioned that a new email was sent out concerning the Eye Benefits. You can also check the website Eyebenefits.com for further information.

·       The Travel committee will be moving ahead with the trip to Ireland in the fall with an extension to London.  Details will be provided as they become available.

Kathleen Jump from EVP/COO Office

·       Addressed a concern regarding the snow line on Dec.9th, not working. The University was open on December 9 and the snow line should’ve been updated regarding any closings.  Kathleen will follow-up with Megan Lowe who oversees the snow line for the EVP-COO.  She also noted that it is very difficult to close the University but that supervisors have been asked to allow personal leave for employees who decide to remain at home during inclimate weather.

·       The Massie Rd exit ramp, “North Grounds Extender”, opened 5 months ahead of schedule.

·       The John Paul Jones Arena is still on schedule and will have its first event in July. There is no public schedule yet, but there will be a website providing future events. You will be able to have your email address added to their list to receive information concerning upcoming events.

·       On January 1st, the University received the Morven Estate.  The University was asked to take possession of Morven prior to John Kluge’s death. The University is looking into the best long-term possibilities for Morven. Meanwhile, it could be used for Seminars.

Beth Reinhard from Human Resources

·       Mentioned that W2’s by law need to be out by the end of January, but will be available online next week.

Guest Speakers

Charles Grisham, Dept. of chemistry gave an update on the Student System Project.

·       The goal of the Student System Project is to provide a state-of -the-art, enterprise-wide, student information system that enables all non-value-added student-related administrative processes to be carried out electronically. Vendor options have been narrowed to two: Banner and People Soft. The University community used a software package to evaluate and prioritize over 2,500 student system requirements. For further information you can contact the SSP website at Student System Project.

Brian Bell, Director for Leadership and Development Center

·       Talked about how the Center serves the academic and administrative community with state-of-the-art programming and personalized consultation that is preparing tomorrow’s leaders for today’s challenges. The Center emphasizes programs for all levels of employees. The workshops and programs are open to everybody and are offered three times a year. They have certified experienced coaches at the senior level to teach how to cope more effectively, communicate better, and focus conversation for clearer issues. Human Resources maintain the records of anyone who graduates from the Leadership and Development Program. For more information check the website at www.virginia.edu/ldc.
