Council Business

Membership: A warm welcome to Janice Coles. Janice is the new council representative    for the University Police Department.

1.               Old Business:

·       The minutes for the April 20th, 2006 meeting were approved by the council.

·       Discussion concerning council representation was continued from our meeting in April. The goal is to improve representation for all departments. No one is less important than anybody else. The door is always open for further suggestions. We can make changes as we go along. The chart that Missy put together was very efficient and informative regarding each department and council representation. This will be further reviewed and approved by Human Resources and the EVP/COO office.

·       Discussion concerning the By-Laws was continued from the meeting in April. It was decided to use Classified employees and University Staff when discussing membership and who is represented by the council.  The Chair has permission to keep things on track. If someone is being disruptive and taking up the council’s time, the Chair has the right to ask them to leave. All new changes to the By-Laws were approved by the council.

Updates

            Kathleen Jump EVP/ECC ex officio:

·       The new budget has been presented to the Board of Visitors and was approved.

·       Architecture presented a new Grounds Plan.  Planning is more visionary and includes environmental awareness involving construction and water conservation etc.

·       The University is engaged in a 10-year planning effort designed to improve the quality of the University and our rankings.  The goal is to achieve a top 15-20 ranking of public or private institutions nationwide.

Alan Cohn, Human Resources ex officio:

·       Renovations are still on-going in Human Resources. They are hoping for an open house around June 15th or later.

·       Workforce Development-Supervisor Training and Development is well on its way. The goal is to make sure new supervisors get the information they need to perform their jobs and be more pro-active in preventing problems. Debbie Gausvik and Tonya Duncan-Rivers have been reassigned to Development and Training. Human Resources is reassigning employees to meet their strengths.

·       Restructuring goes into effect July 1st 2006. New hires will become University Staff and fall under the Board of Visitors. This will have no impact on Classified Staff. HR will do orientation for new hires. The Resource Fair will still be the same.

·       Service Awards are on Tuesday May 23rd. There are 900+employees to recognize.

·       Outstanding contribution awards have been recognized.

The next Council meeting will be on June 15th, 2006. We will be meeting at 400 Ray C. Hunt Dr. in Conference room A. The guest speaker will be Bob Sweeney, Senior Vice President for Development and Public Affairs.
