Guest Speaker
Becky Campbell, Crime
Prevention Community Relations Officer, UVa Police Dept.
Becky talked about the 10 principles of crime prevention:
1. Crime is everybody’s business, be aware of your surroundings
2. Know when to call all levels of agencies and government
3. Solving social problems (local kids think UVa kids have everything).
4. Cost effectiveness (buildings not locked results in equipment getting stolen).
5. Central role of law officers
6. Cooperation & collaboration of community (train children early about crime).
7. Education-(safety talks, really good RAs in dorms, talk to kids. Sunday nights are a good night for talks because more students are available).
8. Tailoring local needs and conditions
9. Continual evaluation & improvements
10. Customer Service is your best tool. Crooks don’t want you to notice them, they won’t speak back. If you treat people right they’ll remember that. Smile and listen to what people are saying. Never make promises you can’t keep & keep the ones you make. Apologize when you make a mistake. You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar.
If you have any concerns about safety issues around the campus let Becky know and she will forward them on to the safety committee. Her email address is crc7u.
RAD, a self-defense class, is a very intense program with a lot of moves on how to get away. The program is 12 hours and will be scheduled with 5 or more people. You have to be age 13 or older, and the cost is $25.00.
Becky talks to a lot of the students’ parents about crime sprees on campus. You can’t control a crook’s desires or abilities but you can control his opportunities by keeping your belongings locked up. IPODS are a very hot item. There were a lot of burglaries in the beginning of the school year. Undercover people were finding doors open all the time. A student was beat up on the corner. There was an attempted kidnapping on Hydraulic rd. and an attempted purse snatching on JPA. There was a whole rash of things going on. The UVA police stepped up patrol and things have calmed down.
Parents need a contact person. Someone they can call and talk to locally and find out where the best places are for kids to live in the area. The university crime rate is lower than the city. You can find information about what is going on around campus from the UVA police web site.
The biggest crime is larceny - ipods, bikes, Laptops, cell phones, etc.
Any new employees at the university have back ground checks. All incoming out-of-state students will have back ground checks. Instate students have records already in system if convicted of a sexual crime. This is to protect the student body.
Jim Fitzgerald:
Assistant Director Community Relations:
Jim talked about the CVC Campaign and online pledging. Online pledging is 100% safe. The campaign ends on Nov. 30th 2006. Last year they met their goal of $650,000.00. A lot of pledges were made to the Katrina Disaster. Give what you feel comfortable with. You have 1400 charities to choose from. If you designate a specific charity, 100% of your donation goes directly to that charity. Larry Sabato is the honorary Chair of the CVC Campaign and has pledge $1.00 for every person that contributes to the campaign. 3600 employees donated in 2005. UVA has been #1 in the state in the past and would like to obtain that honor again. Jim’s email address is jimf@virginia.edu if you have any questions.
Our next meeting will be on Dec.21st, 2006. We
will be meeting at
