·       The search for a replacement for Provost Gene Block has begun.

·       In light of the change of the Provost, the President has asked Leonard Sandridge and Arthur Garson, Dean of the School of Medicine, to co-chair the Commission on the Future of the University to help establish the university’s priorities for the next decade.  The comprehensive ten-year planning effort will look at all areas of the University. The plan will be completed by fall 2007.

Guest Speaker

Mark Fletcher, Director, Intramural Recreational Sports Department:

Mark is Chair and a member of the University Of Virginia’s Security and General Safety Committee. The committee reports to Mr. Sandridge. Membership consists of Students, Faculty & Staff. They meet monthly and hold fall and spring night tours/walks.

The committee works in collaboration with the City of Charlottesville, Student Council, Arboretum Committee, Parking and Transportation Committee, Environmental Health & Safety, Risk Management, University Police, Facilities Management, and the University Architect.

Some of the Agenda Items they work on:

1.     Emergency Phones: phones are placed around the university for emergency purposes. They give a sense of security in a psychological way.

2.     Crosswalk Safety: Many accidents occur at crosswalks due to people not paying attention. They are in cars talking on cell phones or walking and talking on a cell phone.

3.     Lighting on Grounds: The lighting on Emmet St. were paid for with University money not the City’s. Light fixtures can cost at least $3,000 ea.

4.     Review Drawings of  New Facilities

5.     Pre and Post construction Plans: They review drawings and construction plans for safety issues, such as, placement of trees, plants shrubs, walkways stairways and railings and lighting.

6.     Sidewalk Placement/Steps and Railings

7.     Impact of Plantings

8.     Parking Lot/Bus Stop reviews

9.     Police Reports They do night tours once in the spring and once in the fall to check for any areas that need help.

A lot of problems occur around 3 o’clock in the morning. You will see women jogging on Alderman Rd. at 11:30 at night. The Housing Division doesn’t put female students on the first floor. Students have swipe cards to get in and out of the buildings and have to enter a code. These can be monitored through the Housing Division. There have been discussions about changing McCormick Road to a more friendly pedestrian environment.

Our next meeting will be on March 15th, 2007. We will be meeting at 400 Ray C. Hunt Dr. in conference room A. This will be a working session.
