Updates

Beth Reinhard, HR
UVa Works Job Fair was held at the Omni hotel on June 18, 2008. Approximately 900 people attended—more than double last year’s attendance. Beth also discussed the Career Expo held on June 11, 2008 at the John Paul Jones Arena. Approximately 700 staff and faculty attended and received information concerning Human Resources Restructuring.

The Council raised additional question concerning the restructuring including:

  • The distinction between UVa employee and staff
  • Future growth areas for the career “clusters
  • Career transitioning and its effect on salary and career progression
  • Support of education within departments

Beth reiterated details of the education benefit.

  • Training must come from an accredited school
  • The benefit provides  $2,000 or the equivalent of seven credits available each calendar year for further education
  • Professional development and certificate training are approved educational reimbursable options.
  • Only fees and courses are paid, any books or required materials are not covered. Any amount paid out by the University over $5,250 becomes taxable.

A member pointed out that the Equity Comparisons will be on-line in October on the Human Resources website. These comparisons should assist with the career ladder issues being addressed the Human Resources Restructuring.

Beth encouraged questions regarding educational benefits be submitted to Human Resources. A FAQ sheet is being prepared and will be put in the HR website

Kathleen Jump, EVP/ECC ex officio

Kathleen discussed the memo sent last week by Mr. Sandridge regarding flexible work schedules. Several points were discussed

  • Not every job is suitable for this option
  • There are to be no gaps in service
  • Alternative work schedules may be a seasonable option for some employees
  • Compressed work schedules could also include an option for nine-hours days and one day off every two weeks.
  • In those instances that an employee feels that his or her supervisor is inflexible to the idea of alternative work schedules and needs help in communicating with his or her supervisor, it was recommended as a first step that an employee could contact the University Ombudsman.

On August 1, 2008, the department of Parking and Transportation will implement a U.Va. carpool incentive program.  As part of the University’s Transportation Demand Management Program, the incentives are designed to assist employees in their commute, reduce congestion, and reduce emissions in our region.
According to this initiative:

  • Two people participating in a carpool will receive a discount on their parking permit cost, several occasional parker permits, and be eligible for the emergency ride home program.
  • Three people participating in a carpool will get a preferred parking assignment, a higher discount on their parking permit cost, and all the benefits above.
  • Four or more people participating in a carpool will be given free parking in a preferred assignment, and all the benefits above.
  • It is not necessary for someone to carpool all five days to be able to benefit from the program.

Ride matching will be the responsibility of the employees working either through informal sources or through the free service offered by RideShare (operated through the Thomas Jefferson Planning Commission). Information on the Ride Share program can be found at the Parking and Transportation website: http://www.virginia.edu/parking/TDM/involved/index.html

Kathleen shared that national studies show that carpooling is the most inexpensive transportation option for employees and employers.

A question was raised about whether there would be compensation for walkers and bikers. Kathleen will inquire and report back on this.

According to Kathleen, 25% of University employees live within a five-minute walk to a CTS or UTS bus stop that provides direct service to central Grounds. Kathleen also advised that every new garage being built by U.Va. will include bike racks for individuals to be able to park their bikes under cover and with better security.
