Guest Speaker

Libba Bowling, Acting Energy Programs Manager - Energy & Utilities Management Department

  • Information about Energy Programs at the University can be accessed via their website at http://utilities.fm.virginia.edu/energy/.
  • We are looking at cutting our energy expenditures by 20%, which is a big task for such a large institution.
  • Energy rates are set in the summer for the entire year.  This is the busiest time, so we need to try to cut down on our energy use, and the rates could be more affordable.
  • Currently they are going into building to see how energy is being used, and how we can be more efficient when it comes to using energy.  This takes time, as well as manpower.
  • Here are some conservation tips to try:
  • Turn off any lights that do not need to be on, especially when you leave a room.
  • Turn off any equipment that is not being used.
  • Schedule meetings in the morning, especially during the summer.  It is cooler in the morning, and you will not need to run the air conditioning as much to cool the members of the meeting.
  • To read more about these conservation tips go to the following website http://utilities.fm.virginia.edu/energy/conservation.aspx.
  • Recycling is a great way to be a little greener, and the University has a great recycling program.
  • There are cardboard boxes for recycling white paper, as well as other paper.  If you need larger containers for your office you can contact the recycling center to request them at 434-982-5438.
  • All plastics with the recycling symbol can be recycled, including plastic silverware and yogurt containers.
  • Other items that can be recycled are cardboard, small electronics, aluminum, disks and CDs.
  • Goodwill accepts old computers.
  • For more information about recycling here at the University visit their website at http://utilities.fm.virginia.edu/recycling/default.aspx.
  • There are several projects under way to conserve energy across the grounds of the University.  Some of the projects include:
  • Implementing LED lights across the campus, which use much less energy.
  • Insulating steam valves with blankets to reduce the excess loss of steam.
  • Trying to move from electrical pumps to steam pumps.
  • Replacing deficient steam traps across grounds.
  • For more information on current projects visit the website at http://utilities.fm.virginia.edu/projects.aspx?item=energy.
  • The new buildings on grounds are all LEED certified, and any renovations to old buildings must also meet LEED certification.  Making these buildings LEED certified allows us to save on energy from the beginning.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 19 at 1:30 pm in Conference Room A of 400 Ray C. Hunt Drive.
