About the Speaker

Mary Abouzeid, Ph.D.
Professor of Education
Director of McGuffey/TEMPO Reading Outreach program

Mary Abouzeid is a professor in the Curry School of Education at
the University of Virginia and the Director of McGuffey/TEMPO Reading Outreach, the University’s statewide professional development program for teachers and part of the McGuffey Reading Center at UVa. Abouzeid's work focuses on teaching teachers how to teach children to read. Helping implement the federal Reading First initiative in Virginia, Abouzeid and her colleagues work with teachers and schools on research-based methods to match children's instruction to their assessment. In addition to her university teaching and administrative work, Abouzeid works in school districts, with family literacy groups, and teaches individual children in the McGuffey reading clinic. In this talk, Dr. Abouzeid will offer some simple suggestions to parents and family members, based on research in the field of reading, on things they can do to help children with early literacy activities at home before they enter kindergarten.
