Admissions Prospective graduate students should have as a minimum a B average or its equivalent during their undergraduate career to be considered for admission. A higher grade point average is required for financial support. Applications are welcome from students finishing their undergraduate degrees as well as from scientists and engineers who wish to retrain in an area of applied physics. The Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is also required for consideration for financial awards. The advanced GRE in Physics or another field in science or engineering can help in consideration for awards, but is not required. Applications must be accompanied by three recommendations from members of your faculty or from other scientists who can assess your potential for research. Student's with Master's degrees or who have worked for a number of years are encouraged to apply. The general requirements for Master's and Ph.D. degrees in the Engineering Physics program are given in the Graduate Record of the University of Virginia Applications for admission to graduate studies in Engineering Physics may be downloaded through the Internet at: A completed application consists of the following items: 1.Completed and signed application for admission to graduate studies. 2.Three completed recommendation forms. Additional letters may be attached to the form. 3.Two official transcripts from each college or university attended by the applicant. 4.Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores. [Institution Code 5836] 5.A nonrefundable application fee of $60 must accompany all applications; this fee partially covers the cost of processing the application. No information may be forwarded to the department until the fee is received in our Dean's Office. 6.For residents of the State of Virginia , a completed Virginia In-state Tuition application. Completed applications must be received before December 1 for January admission and before August 1 for September admission. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 1.Students whose native language is not English, results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The Educational Testing Service may submit your score report to Institution Code 5836 (GEAS Dean's Office) or Institution Code 5820 (UVA International Studies Office). 2.Submit two (2) copies of all documentation. 3.Financial Guarantee Form must be completed and signed by appropriate officials before admission can be considered. 4.Submit two (2) copies of original language academic records/transcripts with official English translation. International Student applications are due by August 1 for January admission and January 15 for September admission.
