Charge to Committee on Academic Affairs

  1. To implement the Faculty Senate Initiative to Promote Excellence in Teaching.
    1. Create procedure and timetable for solicitation and review of applications, including guidelines for applications, in consultation with the Provost.
    2. Recommend awards to the Provost by year's end, with process in place by late Fall semester.
    3. Collaborate with the Teaching Resource Center in organizing the University-wide forum on teaching.
  2. To recommend measures that will enhance junior faculty development and retention.
    1. Collect and assemble information abut practices that already exist in schools and departments that review, assist, and advise junior faculty in the development of their teaching and research projects.
    2. How can the current practices be improved, including the collegiality among junior faculty among themselves?
    3. How can the development and retention of women and minority faculty in particular be improved.
  3. To recommend measures that will facilitate interdisciplinary teaching.
    1. Collect and assemble information about interdisciplinary teaching across the University. What are the advantages and disadvantages to interdisciplinary teaching? How common is it? What are the obstacles?
    2. What barriers might be removed and incentives be provided in the schools and departments? What kind of incentives?
