The David Harrison III Awards for Undergraduate Advising

Advising is a central part of the intellectual community of U.va. To recognize those who have shown special devotion and skill in this important work, the Harrison Awards for 1999 will offer $3,300 to thirty people from across the University who have distinguished themselves as especially effective advisors of undergraduate students. The Faculty Senate will solicit nominations and select the award recipients.

The definition of "advising" is broad, including formal and informal guidance about academics, life, and careers at any time during a student's years in Charlottesville. An "advisor" may be any full-time faculty member or administrator of the University, including those currently on leave. Nominations may come from any school of the University where undergraduates are taught and from any member of the University community. Students are especially encouraged to submit nominations.

Letters of nomination should be no more than 300 words; email will be accepted. If several people wish to nominate a single advisor, each must submit a separate letter or message. The selection committee will be looking at the strength of each nomination, not at the sheer quantity of nominations. The deadline for submitting nominations is April 5, 1999.
