Agenda Digest

 

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. in the President's Conference Room at Madison Hall. Present were: Ed Ayers; Ingrid Soudek; Theo van Groll; Ben Ray; George Cohen; Milton Adams; Harold Burbach; Marva Barnett; Dan Larson; and Rebecca Kneedler.

Dan Larson, Chair of the Faculty Senate, reviewed the work of the various standing committees of the Senate. He read the charge of the newly established Academic Affairs Committee and reviewed issues to be dealt with by the Committee, i.e., teaching evaluation, posthumous degrees, and the University diploma seal.

Edward Ayers agreed to chair the Academic Affairs Committee.

New Business:

University Diploma Seal: It was adopted that "Beginning with the academic year 1996-97, the gold seal will be affixed to the following diplomas awarded at the University of Virginia: Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Education, Juris Doctor, and the Doctor of Juridical Science. All other diplomas awarded will have the red seal of the University affixed." This action will be reported to the Senate at the April 30, 1996 meeting.

Posthumous Degrees: It was determined that each school will make the determination of the awarding of a posthumous degree within their individual school. Language will be developed by the Committee for a statement on the issuance of posthumous degrees. The developed statement should be brought to the Senate as a motion.

Teaching Evaluation: The Academic Affairs Committee is in support of added funds for the Teaching Resource Center in order to move the teaching evaluaiton process forward. The Committee will develop a statement of rationale in support of this initiative and bring the request to Peter Low.
