August 25, 1999
Newcomb Hall Board Room, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Meeting Minutes:
Present: Robert M. Grainger, Paul A. Cantor, Barbara E. Armacost,
David T. Gies, William R. Pearson, Barbara Parker
Robert Grainger, Chair of the Committee on Research and
Scholarship, called the meeting to order. Introductions were
made.
Mr. Grainger discussed the current on-going charges and new
charges given to the Committee. The promotion for better food,
better service, and increased utilization of the Garden Room, and the
Faculty Senate Faculty Speakers Bureau, both created as part of the
Intellectual Community initiative, will need to be addressed in the
near future, Mr. Grainger said. Other charges the Committee will
need to address are the future of the Forum for Contemporary Thought
and organizing two "conversations" on Teaching, Research and the
Creation of Knowledge, which is also the theme for the Faculty Senate
this year. Mr. Grainger asked for volunteers to help address one of
the four above-mentioned charges by serving on a subcommittee of the
Research and Scholarship Committee.
Charge I: The Garden Room at the Colonnade Hotel
Mr. Grainger gave the group background information on the
initiative. Issues associated with the Garden Room need to be
addressed by a subcommittee of the Research and Scholarship
Committee.
Some issues to be addressed:
· Parking for off-Grounds faculty
· Noise factor for lunch meetings
· How to get word of the Garden Room to all faculty and
encourage use of the facility
· Possible promotional initiatives
· Periodic reminders need to be sent to the Senators
requesting that they take guests to the Garden Room
· The creation of a Garden Room information sheet that would
be available to faculty. Information should include such things as
the phone number of the Garden Room, operating hours, menu items and
prices, the various accepted forms of payment (such as cash, check,
credit card, etc.)
· Cavalier Daily ads, focused on Arts & Sciences
students, inviting them to participate in the Arts & Sciences
program, which provides funds for a student to invite a faculty
member to lunch, and encourage them to dine at the Garden Room
Charge II: Faculty Senate Faculty Speakers Bureau
The charge of this subcommittee will be to help establish
guidelines for administering the program (e.g. details of travel,
lodging and food reimbursement). The subcommittee will also look at
the Faculty Senate Faculty Speakers Bureau web page
(http://nmc.itc.virginia.edu/hln/index.cfm) and edit the page where
necessary and increase the size of the site by recruiting additional
faculty to become a part of the Faculty Senate Faculty Speakers
Bureau.
Charge III: Forum for Contemporary Thought
Mr. Grainger gave the group background information on the Forum
for Contemporary Thought, and the Committee discussed some of the
issues facing the continuation of the Forum. These issues include
budget, how funds will be obtained in the coming years, and getting a
director for the Forum. It was suggested that George Rutherglen, a
professor in the Law School, and others with a long-standing interest
in the Forum for Contemporary Thought, be invited to a future
Committee meeting to share their perception of the Forum and its
future.
Charge IV: Organize two faculty conversations on "Teaching,
Research and the Creation of Knowledge," which is the Faculty
Senate's theme this year. The topic will be addressed at the
upcoming Faculty Senate Retreat. The Retreat will be held on Friday,
September 10, from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m., in the Ballroom at Alumni
Hall.
Mr. Grainger asked for volunteers to serve on each subcommittee,
which will meet independently of the full Committee throughout the
academic year. Barbara Parker, from the School of Nursing,
volunteered to serve on the Faculty Senate Faculty Speakers Bureau,
and Paul Cantor, from the English Department, volunteered to serve on
the Forum for Contemporary Thought.
Mr. Grainger will work with the Research and Scholarship Committee
to get additional volunteers for the four subcommittees.
Mr. Grainger thanked everyone for attending the meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
