Agenda Digest

Rebecca Kneedler called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m. in Room 200 at Ruffner Hall. In attendance were Jahan Ramazani, Daniel Larson, Susan McKinnon, Michael Smith, Sharon Utz, Janet Horne, Miles Townsend and Marguerite Lippert. Guests were Peter Low, Vice President and Provost, Alex Johnson, Vice Provost for Faculty Recruitment, and Robert Reynolds, Vice Provost for Health Sciences.

Alex Johnson discussed faculty diversity and what role the Faculty Senate may play in fostering faculty diversity. Mr. Johnson gave an overview of faculty diversity at UVA; what is happening, what he would like to see happen, and how the University can improve faculty recruitment and retention. The group brainstormed what might be done in an effort to improve recruitment and retention of women and minorities. There was a discussion on what role the Senate should play regarding mentoring initiatives.

Ms. Kneedler distributed a memorandum from Robin Miksad regarding a proposed table of contents for the Research Guide for Faculty. She asked the Executive Council to review the document.

The implementation of the faculty salary increases was briefly discussed.

Ms. Kneedler told the Council that there will be a research forum on February 8, with Til Hazel as a speaker. She urged everyone to attend the forum.

The meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
