Rebecca Kneedler called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. in
Room 200 at Ruffner Hall. In attendance were Jahan Ramazani, Daniel
Larson, Miles Townsend, Patricia Werhane and Edward Ayers. Guests
were Peter Low, Vice President and Provost, and Muriel Poston, ACE
Fellow.
Rebecca Kneedler thanked Peter Low on behalf of the Executive
Council and the full Senate for Mr. Low's and the administration's
work on the issue of faculty salaries at UVa. A brief discussion of
that work took place.
Ed Ayers, Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, gave an
overview of the work the Academic Affairs Committee is doing
regarding teaching evaluation at UVa., and what the Committee hopes
to accomplish. The Executive Council thinks this is a worthwhile
initiative and supports Mr. Ayers' efforts.
The next order of business was a letter requesting the
termination of the Masters of Arts in Public Administration Program,
in the School of Arts & Sciences. It was moved to approve the
termination of the program, it was seconded, and it passed
unanimously. Ms. Kneedler will give an overview of the program and
the decision to terminate it at the Faculty Senate meeting on
December 4.
In other business, Theo van Groll, a member of the Academic
Affairs Committee, will be going on leave in January, and his
replacement needs to be made. It was recommended that Reuben Rainey,
in the School of Architecture, replace Mr. van Groll, effective
January 1, 1997. This recommendation was voted on , seconded and
passed unanimously.
Ms. Kneedler told the Council members that she has spoken with
Jim Tybur, Chair of the Honor Committee, and Mr. Tybur would like
greater faculty participation in the Faculty Advisory Committee and
the Roundtable discussions. Ms. Kneedler will continue to get word
of these meetings to the Senators via e-mail, and she encouraged
attendance.
David Breneman, Dean of the Curry School of Education and Chair
of the Task Force on Continuing Education, and Sondra Stallard, Dean
of the Division of Continuing Education, will speak at the December
4th Faculty Senate meeting.
