The Research and Scholarship Committee participated in the vetting and awarding of the Harrison Awards for Undergraduate Research. As committee chair, Susan Kirk met with Dean Nicole Hurd, Director of the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, during the late summer. At that time, it was proposed that the timing of the announcements and deadline for receipt of proposals be moved forward to the end of the fall semester. This change was suggested as a method of ensuring adequate time on the part of the recipients to plan their research, as well as for applicants who were not funded to apply for funding from other sources. It also allowed for a more defined period of time (winter break) for evaluation and ranking of the proposals by the members of the committee as well as outside readers chosen by Dean Hurd. The final meeting to choose awardees was held in early March. There were 45 Undergraduate Research Awards given this year. Each Award was in an amount of up to $3,000. Each Award recipient's faculty advisor was given $1,000.

Recently, some members were able to participate in a dinner honoring the 2005 recipients of the Harrison Awards.

The committee was also available for discussions with David Hudson, Office of the Vice President of Research, regarding research-related issues.

Respectfully Submitted,

Susan E. Kirk, Chair
