Marcia Childress, Chair of the Research and Scholarship Committee, called the meeting to order.
The main business of the committee was discussion of the administration, review, and selection process for the 2002-2003 David A. Harrison Awards for Undergraduate Research. This program is being administered in part this year by the Office of Undergraduate Excellence in the College of Arts & Sciences, directed by Nicole Hurd. Harrison Award recipients will be announced shortly after Spring Break. The committee discussed possible payment methods for this year's distribution of student awards and faculty stipends. · Student proposals will be received by Monday, February 3, and distributed to readers from the Research and Scholarship Committee by the end of that week. The readers of the proposals should submit their ratings by February 17. There will be approximately 20 proposals per reader. There will be a committee meeting on February 24, and final decisions will be made at that time.
Ms. Childress told the Committee that the on-line course evaluation project has been referred to the Academic Affairs Committee.
The Virginia 2020 Reports: Ms. Childress and Robert Grainger, Past Chair of the Faculty Senate, will review the reports of the four Commissions. They will also review the report done by Michael Levenson, Chair of the English Department. After this review, Ms. Childress and Mr. Grainger will draft a report on the issue.
