Robert Emery Director of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law
Professor and Director of Clinical Training, Department of Psychology

Changing Families: Marriage, Divorce, and Conflict in Children's Lives
Based on his research and experience as a clinical psychologist and divorce mediator, Dr. Emery will discuss what parents can do to ensure their children's well-being. He will present an overview of the demographic changes in American family life with a strong emphasis on the psychological, social, and economic consequences for children. There is no doubt that, on average, children fare better in a happy two-parent family, but conflict in marriage and the changing cultural landscape do not make this possible for all children. Still, children can and do thrive in different types of families, provided that parents continue to meet their responsibilities as parents.
