Challenging
the Status Quo in Community Design and Planning
|
| Communities
throughout the United States are challenged by transportation
problems, land use dilemmas, and negative impacts of sprawling
growth. The current conditions are the result of fifty years
of policies at the federal, state and local levels that have
heavily subsidized suburban sprawl. This phenomenon simultaneously
speaks to the post World War II American dream of the single
family home while producing many vexing problems that affect
the quality of life and sense of community. This presentation
will present alternatives from several communities across the
United States emphasizing the integration of land-use, design
and transportation infrastructure decisions that optimize pedestrian,
bicycle, and transit options through innovative design and planning.
