How to Search for a Speaker

There a variety of ways to search the online database for a speaker.

Requesting a Speaker and Scheduling
Please note that scheduling is sometimes difficult, so identify three to five potential faculty speakers of interest to your group. Once you have chosen a few possible speakers, complete the speaker request form. You will need to provide the name of a contact person in your organization, a daytime phone number and email address as well as preferred dates, times, and locations for the talk.

Audience
One way to find a speaker is to determine the type of audience for your talk:

Commonwealth Lectures can be hosted throughout Virginia by civic groups, non-profit groups who wish to invite a U.Va. faculty member to speak in their community. Since scheduling is sometimes difficult, we suggest that you identify three to five faculty who might be of interest to your group before requesting a speaker. Select from the interest areas to begin your search for a faculty speaker.

Scholastic Enrichment Lectures can be hosted throughout Virginia by student, teacher, or school groups who wish to invite a U.Va. faculty member to speak at their schools special event. Since scheduling is sometimes difficult, we suggest that you identify three to five faculty who might be of interest to your group before requesting a speaker. Select from the interest areas to begin your search for a faculty speaker.

Alumni Association Lectures can be hosted throughout the nation by U.Va. Alumni Clubs who wish to invite a U.Va. faculty member to speak in their community. Expenses for inviting a speaker to a club event are covered by the club unless arrangements are made with the Alumni Association. Since scheduling is sometimes difficult, we suggest that you identify three to five faculty who might be of interest to your group before requesting a speaker. Select from the interest areas to begin your search for a faculty speaker.

Interest Area
Talks are categorized according to general areas of interest: Arts and Humanities, Science and Research, Business and Industry, Medicine and Health, Law and Public Policy, Technology, Architecture, Engineering, Community & Family Issues, Education, and Focus on Virginia. Once the audience type has been determined, select a general interest area for your group.

Results Listing
The search criteria will produce a list of talk topics according to your selected interest area and audience. From there, you can view speaker profiles that will detail a faculty member's area of expertise, background, and past talks given.
