Sponsored by the Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. at Memorial Gymnasium, with race start time at 8:00 a.m. Race format-combined times in various categories: student/family member, student/student, faculty/student, etc. Entry fee: $15/runner (includes t-shirt, refreshments and awards). An awards ceremony immediately follows the race.

Maurice Apprey, Dean of the Office of African American Affairs, will provide updates and perspectives about the state of African american Affairs at the University of Virginia. (Bus service will be available to transport parents to Wilson Hall Auditorium from University Hall beginning at 7:00 a.m.).

UVaFamilies will host an informal continental breakfast and social for students, parents, and families. Breakfast will take place under a tent on the South Lawn, near Old Cabell Hall. The event provides an opportunity for families to meet others in their home region and learn about ways to be involved with the University through events, lectures, travel, UVaClubs, and more. No RSVP is needed.

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Declaring Independence: Creating and Re-creating America's Document
Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library
This exhibit displays highlights of the most comprehensive collection of letters, documents, and early printings of the Declaration of Independence. The exhibition sheds light on not only the writing and signing of the Declaration, but also on its first printing, distribution across the colonies, and future impact on American history. An accompanying documentary film is available for viewing in the gallery. (Docents will be on hand.)

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Flowerdew Hundred: Unearthing Virginia's History
Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library
Featuring archaeological artifacts on loan from the Flowerdew Hundred Foundation, this exhibit presents material evidence of Virginia's early inhabitants: Native american pottery sherds; arms and armor used to defend the new colony; refined, imported wares from Europe; and american goods, including items manufactured by African Americans The materials from U.Va.'s Special Collections also on display—images from sixteenth- and seventeenth-century maps and books—illustrate the importance of the historical record in the study of material culture.

The U.Va. Library's newest exhibition uses its extensive Virginian collection to demonstrate how Virginians throughout the state's history have envisioned themselves and the Commonwealth. Through history, literature, art, maps, and children’s fiction, Virginia Visions explores Jamestown, the Eastern Shore, Russell County and southwestern Virginia, Appalachia, Richmond, Charlottesville, and the University of Virginia.

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Beyond the Serpentine Walls: Exploring the Pavilion Gardens at the University of Virginia.

Nestled between the Lawn and the East and West Ranges, and within the famous serpentine walls, like the Pavilion Gardens. Designed by Thomas Jefferson as an integral part of the Academical Village, these quiet enclaves offer a shady respite from the rigors of scholarly pursuits. Through photos and drawings, the exhibit highlights many aspects of this unique feature of the University of Virginia.

Each class will host a hospitality site to provide information about class-specific programs and events. This event is sponsored by the First-, Second-, and Third-Year Councils, and the Fourth-Year Trustees. Rain locations are Jefferson Hall (Classes of 2008 and 2009) and Minor Hall Lobby (Classes of 2010 and 2011).

Do you have a bunch of cool old stuff collecting dust in your attic or the corner of a closet? The Library’s preservation specialists Ellen Welch and Holly Robertson are here to help, by showing you how to preserve everything from dolls, clothes, and sound recordings to photographs, news clippings, and letters. In addition to handouts with “how-to’s”, exciting and recently conserved materials from the Library’s collections will also be on display. Stick around afterwards for one-on-one chats and Q&A.

Brown Science and Engineering Library for a discussion of this ancient art.  First, browse the library's collection of field guides, species accounts, and conservation literature.  Then, get a glimpse into the mysterious world of trained raptors and learn firsthand what makes these majestic birds of prey such skilled hunters.

Do you have too many digital photos and no idea what to do with them? Come by Clemons Library and learn some cool tips and tricks for organizing your files. Bess Sadler, Metadata Specialist in the Library’s Digital Research and Instructional Services department, and Liz Gushee, Image Collection Librarian at the Fine Arts Library, will show you how to use software such as flickr.com and iPhoto to keep your digital photos organized and accessible for years to come.

Rosie the Riveter galvanized World War II-era american women to join the war effort with her fa.m.ous "We Can Do It!" This tour explores how the women of U.Va. "did it," breaking down barriers to Mr. Jefferson's University. It chronicles their lives as faculty wives and slaves, the years of academic exclusion all the way until they opened the doors to the last state school in the country to co-educate. Sponsored by the University Guide Service.

Enjoy the lively performance of the U.Va. Chamber Singers, the University Singers, the Virginia Glee Club, and the Virginia Women’s Chorus. The program will conclude with the combined singing of all the ensembles, more than 160 voices strong. Tickets are $5 for UVa students/$10 for the public and will be available at the Cabell Hall Box Office (434-924-3984), on the Lawn, and at the door.
