HEALTH INSURANCE PREMIUM REIMBURSEMENTS
This policy describes the general guidelines for reimbursing health insurance premiums.
2.0 Policy [Top]
This policy is applicable to all classes of individuals affiliated with the University but does not represent an entitlement for any individual.
Examples of classes of individuals which could potentially be reimbursed for health insurance costs include wage personnel, part- time personnel, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students employed as teaching or research assistants with significant academic responsibilities earning at least $2,000 per academic year.
Reimbursements can be made for costs of health insurance premiums providing coverage for individuals. Additional costs for family coverage can be reimbursed.
The reimbursement amount is limited to the maximum premium paid by the Commonwealth for family health care coverage under the health care programs available at the University ($389/month for calendar 1997 and $424/month for calendar 1998).
2.4 Fund Sources
Reimbursements can be made from any local source of funds, if there are no contrary restrictions applicable to the funds. Reimbursements can be made from overhead funds and sponsored program funds if:
- The budget includes this category of expenditure,
- The award does not restrict expenditures, or
- Specific sponsor approval has been obtained.
Under no circumstances can state educational and general funds be used for these reimbursements.
The individual department head (or principal investigator in the case of sponsored programs) will determine the eligibility based on available departmental resources.
Individuals will be reimbursed using a combo form. Payments must be supported by appropriate documentation (canceled checks, premium notices, etc.) which must be submitted by the individual. In no cases will payments be made directly to an insurance provider.
Procedure 6-4, "Preparing Combo Forms."
