2008-2009 Loan Applications

The University of Virginia participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program(FFELP), and we do not have a preferred lender list.. You may borrow from any lending institution that participates in FFELP and offers Student Loans.  Following is information about applying for the different types of loans available to students and parents.


Stafford Subsidized Loan

    1. First time Stafford Loan borrowers must determine which lender they prefer, and provide the lender information to us on the Financial Aid Change form received with your award letter.  If you do not have that form available, you may complete a blank Financial Aid Change form .If you have borrowed through the Stafford Loan program as a UVA student, you must reaffirm your lender for 08-09 submitting the Financial Aid Change form.

    2. If you are a first-time borrower you must also:
      • Apply for the loan and complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) with the lender you have chosen.  For more information about this process, go to the lender’s web site, or contact their office.
      • Complete on-line entrance counseling at Mapping Your Future .

    3. If you have borrowed through the Stafford Loan program as a UVA student and have not changed lenders , there is no need to sign another MPN as it will already be on file at your lending institution.

    4. Final register for the number of hours specified on your award letter.

    5. If you would like to decrease your awarded loan amount or choose another lender please complete the Financial Aid Change form and send it to our office.


    Stafford Unsubsidized Loan

    1. Students who have been awarded a Stafford Unsubsidized loan or whose parents have been denied a PLUS loan must:
      • Return the Loan Acceptance/Change form sent with your award letter or complete a University Unsubsidized Loan Application and inform us of the lender you have chosen.

    2. If you are a first-time borrower you must also:
      • Apply for the loan, and complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) with the lender you have chosen.  For more information about this process, go to the lender’s web site, or contact their office.
      • Complete on-line entrance counseling at Mapping Your Future.

    Graduate PLUS Loan

    1. The student should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

    2. The student should complete the University’s Graduate Financial Aid application and/or the University’s Graduate Summer School Financial Aid Application or the Darden Financial Aid Application.

    3. The student should complete the UVA Graduate PLUS Loan Application and return it to: Student Financial Services, PO Box 400204, Charlottesville, VA  22904-4204.Upon receipt of this application, Student Financial Services will certify the loan.

    4. A Master Promissory Note and further instructions will be mailed to you by the lender that you have chosen. In most cases, lenders will offer an on-line application.

    Parent PLUS Loan

    Parents who want a PLUS loan must:

    1. Complete the University PLUS Application, being sure to indicate the lender that you prefer to us.

    2. Apply for the loan, and sign your Master Promissory Note (MPN) with the lender you have chosen.  For more information about this process, go to the lender’s web site, or contact their office.

    3. If you would like to decrease your approved loan amount complete the Financial Aid Change form.

    Alternative Loans

    Many banks offer alternative student loans.  Rates and conditions vary, so it is wise to review several banks’ programs.  Please contact the lender of your choice for instructions about applying.  The University will certify the loan once all other Financial Aid has been completed.
