Estimated Cost of Attendance

Each year Student Financial Services establishes standard student budgets that use cost of attendance estimates for awarding financial aid funds. The budgets reflect typical "modest but adequate" expense patterns for University of Virginia students.

Some students will spend more than the standard amounts, while others will spend less, depending on individual lifestyles and circumstances. Eligibility for financial aid, however, is based on the standard budget allowances, not on individual preferences and spending habits.

Special Situations

A student and/or parent may have changes in their financial situation. Any student or parent may request a re-evaluation of the student's need by submitting an Appeal for Reconsideration to Student Financial Services. Please keep in mind that consumer debt such as credit card bills and car expenses are not considered unique expenses for federal financial aid purposes. To determine if your situation warrants an appeal, see our Appeals for Reconsideration policy.
