General Information
University of Virginia students who receive financial aid must reapply each year by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The 2007-08 FAFSA will be available on January 1, 2007. In addition to completing a FAFSA each year, students must meet enrollment and satisfactory academic progress standards. Students who wish to apply for financial aid should use resources available on the Web. This includes the FAFSA link below.

The Basics

  1. Students should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1st for entering undergraduates and March 31st for all other students. If necessary, students can submit tax information required on the FAFSA with estimated figures rather than delay their application. Students who return their FAFSA application later than the priority date will continue to be considered for financial aid as long as the funds remain available.
  2. Students who have applied for admission to U.Va should also submit the FAFSA. They should not wait for an admissions decision before completing the FAFSA.
  3. Students should contact the U.Va. department in which they plan to enroll for other scholarship opportunities or visit the Scholarships page for more information.
  4. Students should respond quickly to all requests for financial aid information.
  5. Students should put their name and ID number on all documents they submit as part of their application for financial aid. They should also keep a copy of the forms they submit and the materials they receive related to financial aid.
  6. Students should ask questions regarding any parts of the financial aid process that they find confusing.

Types of Financial Aid

Undergraduate Students

Students who complete the FAFSA and are enrolling in an undergraduate program are applying for the following forms of financial aid:

Graduate or Professional Students

Students who complete the FAFSA, have a bachelor's degree, and are enrolling in a graduate or professional program are applying for the following forms of financial aid:

Need-Based Financial Aid

Students who wish to apply for need-based aid must complete and file the FAFSA or Renewal Application by the March priority filing date in order to receive priority consideration. U.Va. will meet 100% of students' demonstrated need through a combination of grants, federal need-based loans, and federal work study.

Non Need-Based Financial Aid

Students who wish to apply for non need-based financial aid must first file the FAFSA. In addition to being considered for Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and Parent PLUS loans, they may also be considered for certain merit scholarships.
