General Information
University of Virginia students who receive financial aid must reapply each year by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The 2012-2013 FAFSA is now available. In addition to completing a FAFSA each year, students must meet enrollment and satisfactory academic progress standards. Students who wish to apply for financial aid should use resources available on the Web. This includes the FAFSA link below.

The Basics

  1. Students should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the March 1st deadline to be considered for state and institutional funds. Entering undergraduate students can submit tax information required on the FAFSA with estimated figures rather than delay their application. Students who return their FAFSA application later than the deadline date will continue to be considered for federal forms of financial aid. Returning undergraduates should not submit tax returns or other supporting documentation unless explicitly requested to do so.

  2. Students who have applied for admission to U.Va should also submit the FAFSA. They should not wait for an admissions decision before completing the FAFSA. Waiting for an admission decision before completing the FAFSA will almost certainly mean that an admission decision will be required without a completed preliminary award available for the student to consider.

  3. Students should contact the U.Va. department in which they plan to enroll for other scholarship opportunities or visit the Scholarships page for more information.

  4. Students should respond quickly to all requests for financial aid information.

  5. Students should put their name and SIS ID number on all documents they submit as part of their application for financial aid. They should also keep a copy of the forms they submit and the materials they receive related to financial aid.

  6. Students should ask questions regarding any parts of the financial aid process that they find confusing.

Students who wish to apply for non-need based financial aid must first file the FAFSA. In addition to being considered for Pell Grants, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and Direct PLUS (Parent PLUS) loans, they may also be considered for certain merit scholarships. In general, however, merit scholarships are not administered by Student Financial Services.
