Laptops for Students Program
General Information About the Program
Certain undergraduate students who have applied for Financial Aid, and who have not previously received a Laptop through the Laptops for Students Program, or received a One-Time Computer Expense loan, may apply for a free laptop through this program. To be eligible, the student must complete the FAFSA and the CSS/Profile (completed at the College Board website), and have provided all other requested documentation to Student Financial Services.
There are a very limited number of laptops available each year. Priority is given to entering first-year students with demonstrated financial need. It is important to ensure all proper documentation is submitted to Student Financial Services by the established deadlines.
Please note, if a student receives a laptop through this program, and leaves the University prior to graduation, the laptop MUST be returned to U.Va. prior to departure, as it is considered University property.
Application for 2013-2014
Appeals for Reconsideration
Financial aid eligibility is calculated based on the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Income and asset information is evaluated using a formula called Federal Methodology as set by Congress. The formula assumes that previous year’s income, assets, and family size are good predictors of a family’s financial strength. Based on this assumption, financial aid eligibility is determined using previous year income information. However, the Department of Education gives Student Financial Services the authority to use Professional Judgment on a case by case basis to adjust elements in the federal need analysis to take into consideration a family’s special circumstances.
Supporting documentation must be provided when an Appeal for Reconsideration is submitted. The Student Financial services Appeal Committee anticipates it will begin reviews for the 2013-2014 academic year no earlier than September 2013. Therefore, it is important that you determine alternative methods of payment for Fall and Spring of the academic year until your Appeal can be considered. The student and/or parent(s) have the primary responsible for any financial obligation that may exist prior to the completion of the review process.
PLEASE NOTE: Appeals for Reconsideration generally result in additional loan eligibility only or a federal Pell grant.. Additional institutional grant funding is not awarded based on recent changes in financial circumstance.
For more detailed information about the conditions under which an appeal can be filed, please review this form.
