Departmental News:

John Lyons has just been named by the French Embassy to this year's jury for the Chateaubriand Fellowships.

Congratulations to Isabelle Reeves and Paula Sato on having been selected as recipients of next year's French Department Dissertation Fellowships. We greatly look forward to seeing the fruits of their research and writing!

Wade Edwards has accepted a tenure-track position at Longwood College. Congratulations Wade!

Congratulations to Stéphanie Mayer who has just been invited to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Nation's oldest Honor Society

Alumni News:

As part of a special forum on "Film in the Teaching of French History," the most recent issue of French Historical Studies (Vol. 25, No. 1, Winter 2002) features two articles by UVA French department grads:

Brett Bowles (BA. 1992, MA. 1994), "Screening les Annees Noires: Using Film to Teach the Occupation"(pp. 21-40)

and

Alison Murray (Ph.D. 1998), "Teaching Colonial History through Film"(pp. 41-52)

Brett Bowles is currently Assistant Professor of French at Iowa State University and Alison Murray is Assistant Professor of French at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Congratulations Brett and Alison !

Poetry Reciting Contest - copies of poems by Victor Hugo and entry forms can be picked up at the Maison Française or in Cabell 302 beginning March 4.(Special office hours will be held by Mrs. Zunz to give students the opportunity to go over the pronunciation and diction). Opening remarks by Professor Emeritus Robert T. Denommé. Prizes presented to the winners.

French Essay Contest
Maas Prize 2002

First Prize $2,000
Second Prize $1,000
Third Prize $500

Participants in this annual contest write a short essay in French (limited to 2,500 words) on an aspect of Franco-American relations acceptable to the prize committee. The contest is open to all undergraduate students of French at the University (not just French majors). The deadline for this year's competition is Friday, April 12. The Award Ceremony will take place on April 19 at the Maison Française. Visit this link for further information: Maas Prize 2002.
