Should You Take the Placement Test?

The Placement Test (F-CAPE) is most useful for students who:

  • have not had French for many years
  • already have a placement score, but from a test taken several years ago.
  • might be able to test out of the requirement (an appropriate SAT II, AP, or F-CAPE score is required to "test out" of the French Language Requirement)

If you have a good idea of where you should place based on your recent AP score, your recent SAT II score, and/or your recent experience in language courses, you don't need to take the placement test. Take the Placement Test at UVa only if you came very close to testing out of the requirement with the SAT II, and want a second chance.

If you tend to get low scores on standardized tests, read the descriptions of the French 101-232 courses to see if it seems appropriate to take a more advanced course than the one your SAT II, or F-CAPE score indicates.
