Department of French at the University of Virginia

FAQ's About the French Department and Tutoring

How can I hire a private tutor?

The French Department does not carry a staff of tutors for hire, however, it does maintain a list of students who are available for hire as tutors. The French Department cannot confirm the skill level of tutors who sign-up on the list. Fees for tutoring are to be negotiated between the hiring party and the tutor themselves. There are two ways in which you can find a private tutor with the assistance of the French Department:

  • Send an e-mail to Tamar Samuel-Siegel at tamar@virginia.edu and request that a copy of our list of tutors be sent to you as either an e-mail attachment, or as a hard copy by postal mail.
  • Send an e-mail to Tamar Samuel-Siegel at tamar@virginia.edu outlining the type of tutoring you seek, how many hours per week, your contact information, and any other specifics. She can then forward your message to our e-mail listserves which include all of our graduate students and French majors and minors.

I am a UVa student in a French class who would like to use the Department's free tutoring service. Where can I find information?

The French Department staffs a tutoring service with regular hours of operation through the last week of classes.
Students should sign up for tutoring on the sign-up sheet posted near the French Department office (the door of 301
Cabell Hall). Please sign up for no more than 1 or 2 half-hour appointments in a row. The room number depends
upon the time and day of the tutoring session. Room numbers are posted on the sign-up sheet. Please visit the following link for more information and the tutoring service guidelines:

Send an e-mail stating your wish to be added to the list to Tamar Samuel-Siegel at tamar@virginia.edu. Please include your name, contact information (e-mail address and phone number) and the year you plan to graduate.
